Golfer Takes On Pga

Compiled From Wire Services

A Eugene golfer with a disabling leg condition is taking the Professional Golf Association to federal court over its rule that prohibits players from using golf carts.

Casey Martin, 25, has a condition that causes swelling in his knee and makes it painful to walk long distances. He wants to use his own golf cart during the final qualifying stage for the 1998 PGA Tour early next month in Orlando, Fla.

A federal judge will consider Martin’s request at a hearing on Friday.
