Ten years ago: A South African Airways Boeing 747 crashed into the Indian Ocean with the loss of all 159 people aboard.

Five years ago: In Bosnia-Herzegovina, a breakthrough in the relief effort came with the delivery of 137 tons of food and supplies to the isolated town of Srebrenica. In King William’s Town, South Africa, four people were killed and about 20 injured when black militant gunmen attacked a country club.

One year ago: Defense Secretary William Perry joined U.S. soldiers in the mud and freezing rain of Bosnia-Herzegovina to deliver a Thanksgiving message of discipline and patience for their still-unfinished peacekeeping mission.
