Notre Dame’s Lee Lands Gte Academic Honor

The honors keep coming in for Notre Dame senior Jaimie Lee of Spokane (Ferris High School).

The two-time Big East Volleyball Player of the Year has been named to the GTE Academic All-District V team and is eligible for academic All-America honors.

She has a 3.341 grade-point average as a sociology major.

Lee also earned Big East Tournament most valuable player honors after a school-record 29 kills in a four-game win over Villanova for the title. During the summer, Lee was captain of the U.S. team that finished second in the World University Games in Catania, Sicily.

Academic awards

Washington State had two first-team selections and seven second-team picks when the Pacific-10 Conference announced all-academic teams in volleyball, women’s soccer and cross country.

First-team picks are both in cross country: Jonathon Murray, a junior with a 3.35 grade-point average in geology, and Kristin Ritzenhaler, senior, 3.87, human nutrition and food.

Second-team selections by sport: Cross country-Joanne Hunsinger, jr., 3.66, human nutrition and food; Kimberley Schmolka, jr., 3.69, social studies. Women’s soccer-Shalli DeWitt, sr., 3.20, biology; Randi Glas, jr., 3.28, psychology. Volleyball-Jennifer Stinson, jr., 3.54, education; Shannon Wyckoff, sr., 3.45, education; Wendy Rouse, sophomore, 3.75, exercise science.

Stinson and Wyckoff were named to the GTE Academic All-District VIII team.

Honorable-mention lists included University of Oregon cross country runner Micah Davis of Spokane (Mead) and Cougars David Jungk, Brad Treat, and Shannon Bonogfski and WSU soccer players Meagin Donovan and Christina Pallan.

Baseball

Eastern Washington University’s Holiday Baseball Camp will run Dec. 27-30 in Cheney. Cost is $245 for live-in; $175 commuter, with sessions from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Basketball

Three Inland Empire players who were members of the Spokane Stars this summer have signed letters of intent with the University of Portland.

The Pilots signed Alison Asher, a 6-foot4 center from Lake City in Coeur d’Alene; Heather Reeder, 6-1, from Eastmont of Wenatchee; and Tami Standish, 6-2, Ellensburg.

Asher, a Street & Smith preseason AllAmerica honorable mention, led the state of Idaho with 150 blocks last season as a junior and shot better than 60 percent from the floor.

College scene

Lisa Lentz of Spokane (Central Valley) is the starting point guard for the Grace Bible College women’s basketball team in Grand Rapids, Mich.

In a tournament last weekend in Oakland, Ind., she scored 34 points in a semifinal win, but her team lost in the title game.

The Mallory sisters of Inchelium have been reunited at Northwest College in Kirkland, Wash.

Emily Mallory, who played her freshman year at Wenatchee Valley College, transferred to join older sister Leah on the basketball team. They also played together in volleyball, where Leah completed her fourth year.

Sisters Jessica and Sarah Menard of Spokane (North Central) are starters on the Northwest Nazarene volleyball team that will be in Kankakee, Ill., this week for the NAIA National Championships.

Jessica is a senior and Sarah a freshman on the NNC team that is 31-9 after winning the Pacific Northwest Regional tournament.

Erika Robinson of Spokane (Lewis and Clark), a freshman setter on the University of Toledo volleyball team, appeared in 13 matches with 10 assists and 15 digs.

Neala Kendall of Pullman is a freshman on the Kenyon College women’s swim team in Gambier, Ohio.

Kendall is a freestyle specialist, who set a district record in the 500 free in high school and was a state finalist in the 200 and 500.

Annaka Gustafson of Spokane (Mead), a junior at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif., earned her fourth All-America award with an 11th-place finish in the NAIA National Cross Country Championships.

Gustafson, a two-time track All-American, earned a second cross country honor in leading the Westmont women to a second straight third-place national finish.

She earlier earned All-Golden State Athletic Conference honors as Westmont won the league title.

Rodeo

Ed Thiele of Omak, who has been involved with the Omak Stampede in virtually every capacity since 1962, has been recognized for his volunteer work with the PRCA John Justin Standard of the West Award for 1997.

Thiele also worked with the Cheney and Colville rodeos.

Soccer

Billy Sleeth of Spokane, a senior at Ferris and an All-Greater Spokane League selection, has been named to the Region IV Olympic Development Program U-18 soccer team.

Selections were made following a summer ODP camp that involved players from 14 Western states. The Region IV team will play in an inter-regional tournament in San Diego on Jan. 1-5.

Track and field

Mandy Borschowa, a two-time state discus champion from Mount Si in Snoqualmie, Wash., has signed a letter of intent to attend Washington State.

Borschowa placed seventh at the 1995 State AA meet as a freshman, then won titles as a sophomore and junior, adding a third in the javelin and fourth in the shot put last year. Her discus best is 157 feet, the fifth-best throw in Washington prep history and tops for a junior in the state.
