Williams Gives Tar Heels Edge Over Boilermakers

Shammond Williams made a 3-pointer with 1:24 left and sank two free throws with seven seconds remaining to give No. 4 North Carolina a 73-69 victory over sixth-ranked Purdue on Saturday in the championship of the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage.

Williams scored eight of the Tar Heels’ (6-0) final nine points as North Carolina overcame an 11-point deficit in the second half.

Brad Miller, who led all scorers with 29 points, brought Purdue within 70-69 with 16 seconds left. The Boilermakers (5-1), needing to stop the clock, fouled Antawn Jamison with nine seconds left. But Alan Eldridge was called for an intentional foul, giving North Carolina two shots and possession.

Jamison hit one of two free throws before Williams hit his two to give Carolina its third tournament title.

Jamison, the tournament MVP, scored 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting and added nine rebounds. Williams also scored 23.

(8) Kentucky 76, (13) Clemson 61

Wayne Turner started a 15-2 run with a baseline jumper and had nine of his 17 points in the second half as the Wildcats (4-1) broke away from the Tigers (3-2) for a victory in the Premier Classic at Phoenix.

Scott Padgett had 15 points and Allen Edwards 13 for Kentucky.

Greg Buckner scored 19 points for Clemson, which dropped its second game in six days. The other loss came against Gonzaga in the championship of the Top of the World Classic.

At Albuquerque, Kenny Thomas had 21 points, 15 rebounds and a career-high eight assists as the Lobos (5-0) extended their home winning streak to 31 games by defeating the Spartans (0-4).

The 6-foot-8, 250-pound Thomas has scored and rebounded in double figures in five straight games. In the first half, he had more rebounds (8) than San Jose State. (7).

San Jose State’s four losses have come by an average of 29 points.

Arkansas 70, (12) Fresno St. 69

At Phoenix, Tarik Wallace broke a tie with a crucial 3-pointer, and Nick Davis added a key free throw as the Razorbacks (4-0) defeated the Bulldogs (3-1) in the Premier Classic.

Wallace broke a 66-66 tie with 1:58 to play, and Davis made the first shot of a one-and-one 42 seconds later. Davis finished with 15 points, and Wallace had 14.

At Iowa City, Iowa, Ryan Bowen scored 20 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead the Hawkeyes (3-0) over the Blackbirds (2-3).

Reserve J.R. Koch scored 19 points for Iowa (3-0), which topped 100 points for the third time.

LIU’s Charles Jones, who was averaging 41 points a game, scored 21.

At Salt Lake City, Michael Doleac scored 19 points and Hanno Mottola added 16 as the Utes (5-0) defeated the Anteaters (1-3).

Wisconsin 75, (18) Oklahoma 64

Duany Duany scored five of his 13 points during a 12-0 fourth-quarter run to lead the Badgers (2-3) past the Sooners (3-2) in a consolation game at the Big Island Invitational Tournament in Hilo, Hawaii.

Sean Mason, who hit two free throws in the run, led Wisconsin with 17 points. Eduardo Najera scored 17 points to lead Oklahoma.

Georgia Tech 73, (19) Louisville 69

Matt Harpring had 18 points as the Yellow Jackets (4-0) upset the Cardinals (2-1) in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Shootout at Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Freshman Dion Glover also had 18 points and Michael Maddox had 16 to lead Tech. Both were selected to the all-tournament team, and Harpring was picked as the tournament’s most valuable player.

Freshman Cameron Murray scored 14 for Louisville, and Marques Maybin added 11 points.
