A Baker’s Helper

These days, fewer and fewer people have time to bake their own bread, much less bother with the care and feeding of a sourdough starter.

Fleischmann’s makes it easier with its new Ready-To-Use Sourdough Starter, yeast packets paired with authentic, freeze-dried San Francisco sourdough culture. Tasty, tangy loaves can be made by hand in as little as nine hours (mostly rising time in the refrigerator), or an acceptable version can be baked in a bread machine’s regular cycle.

All things considered, it’s a pretty sweet deal.

Cost: Between $2 and $2.50 per package (enough to make three 1-pound loaves).

Available: Most major supermarkets. , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Color Photo
