Aspirant Olvera Vows To Keep Growth In Check Realtor Experience Key, Says Cda Council Hopeful

Manny Olvera says he wants to keep the best of the city while dealing with inevitable growth.

And, he says, his experience in real estate will be key if he is elected to the Coeur d’Alene City Council in November.

“I like this community the way it is,” said Olvera, who moved here from Santa Maria, Calif., a year ago. “If I had a say, we wouldn’t have any growth.”

But growth is unavoidable. “We have to make the best of what goes on,” he said.

Olvera is one of six candidates running for three City Council positions. A broker with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, he says civic commitment propelled him into the race.

“I believe all citizens should participate,” he said. “I believe in working toward effecting more efficient, responsive and economical government at all levels.”

Olvera says his priorities include improving streets and other infrastructure and keeping police and fire services in top condition, while making sure taxes are reasonable.

“Taxes shouldn’t be so high that people can’t afford to stay in their homes,” he said.

Olvera also says he is concerned about a lack of high-paying jobs and wants to see more high-tech industry move into the area.

Olvera has owned several small businesses, including a light manufacturing and aircraft welding company in California. He also worked as a welding instructor in Boise.

His interest in government dates back to his days with the California Association of Realtors. He was land-use chairman and legislative chairman for the board, giving him ample experience in dealing with local government, he said.

Olvera does not have a position on whether the city should purchase an easement to Sanders Beach or try to buy the property. Neighbors in the East Lakeshore Drive area have been clamoring for the City Council to tackle the long-standing conflict over public use of the popular beach.
