‘Heidi’ Game Nfl’s Most Memorable Regular-Season Moment

Bloomberg News

The infamous “Heidi” game between the New York Jets and Oakland Raiders was voted the most memorable regular-season moment in National Football League history in a recent poll of members of the media.

The NFL conducted the poll to mark the 10,000th regular-season game in league history, which will be played Sunday afternoon.

Entering next weekend, there have been 9,992 NFL games played. There are seven games scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern time, which will bring the total to 9,999. The first of the four 4 p.m. Eastern time games to end will become the 10,000th in league history.

Of the all the regular-season games played since the league was founded in 1920, the one that stood out to the media panel was the game between the Jets and Raiders on Nov. 17, 1968. With 50 seconds remaining and the Jets leading 32-29, NBC stopped broadcasting the game and switched to the children’s film “Heidi.”

The Raiders scored two touchdowns during those final 50 seconds for a 43-32 victory.

Even though the Jets and Raiders were in the rival American Football League when they played the game, the NFL counts all AFL records as its own. It also counts the AFL games played before the merger took effect for the 1970 season.
