Fresno State Sack Attack Stops Utah

Associated Press

Utah didn’t have time to get its offense off the ground.

Fresno State racked up a school-record 12 sacks and held Utah to a season-low in points in a 27-13 victory Thursday night.

Billy Volek threw for three touchdowns and linebacker A.J. Gass led the defensive effort with five sacks.

Fresno State (2-3, 1-0 WAC), playing its conference opener, eclipsed its previous high for sacks, 10 in a 1987 game against UCLA. The Utes (3-2, 2-1 WAC) saw their three-game winning streak end. They remained winless in three meetings at Fresno.

The Bulldogs, who were allowing 30 points a game, pressured Utah relentlessly, using an array of blitzes and stunts to frustrate an offense that had been averaging 32 points a game.

K-State not looking at past

Bill Snyder doesn’t think Kansas State’s 28-game losing streak against Nebraska will be a big factor when the teams meet Saturday.

“My experience with young people is when yesterday’s gone, it’s gone,” the Wildcats coach said. “I don’t think they give a hoot what happened last year or the year before.”

This will be the third straight season that Kansas State has been undefeated entering the Nebraska game. The Cornhuskers easily won the last two meetings, 49-25 in 1995 and 39-3 last season.

No. 3 Nebraska and No. 17 Kansas State are both 3-0 going into this year’s game in Lincoln, Neb.
