Just Monkeying Around

For a quarter-century, the furry residents of two tiny islands in the Florida Keys have been having a swinging time. But now the red mangroves are decimated, and the water around the islands is polluted with waste. The culprits: about 1,000 Rhesus monkeys bred for research. The monkeys have long worn out their welcome with nearby residents, who complain of the smell, worry about the mangrove destruction and fear that a storm could blow monkeys onto neighboring islands like a scene out of “The Wizard of Oz.” An eviction is being worked out.
