Arizona Hands WSU First Loss Of The Season

Washington State’s sixth-ranked women’s volleyball team is unbeaten no more.

Arizona, ranked 15th, rallied for a 15-12, 11-15, 7-15, 15-10, 16-14 Pac-10 victory over the Cougars Friday night in Tucson, Ariz.

Carolyn Penfield totaled a match-high 20 kills to pace the Wildcats (11-1, 3-1).

Jennifer Stinson topped the Cougars (16-1, 4-1) with 17 kills and 10 blocks.

WSU fell apart late in the fifth game, blowing leads of 10-6 and 13-9.

Allison Napier’s kill ended the game.

“When you’re up 13-9 (in the fifth), there’s no way we should have lost that game,” said WSU coach Cindy Fredrick. “Just too many unforced errors at the end of the game which absolutely, positively are uncalled for.

“We had three different people make hitting errors in a row which I don’t know how to explain. I’m not pleased with the way our veterans played.”

The Cougars travel to Tempe, Ariz., tonight to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Women’s soccer

Randi Glas scored a pair of goals to lead Washington State to a 4-1 victory over Louisville in Lexington, Ky.

The Cougars (4-4-0) evened their record with their second-straight road win. The Cardinals (5-6) have now lost five in a row.

The first goal by Glas gave WSU a 3-0 halftime lead. Her next score, an unassisted goal, came just 37 seconds into the second half.

Deka DeWitt and Tina Walsh rounded out the scoring for WSU.

Women’s volleyball

San Diego swept Gonzaga 16-14, 15-6, 15-8 in a West Coast Conference opener at San Diego.

Diane Pascua had 12 kills and Nicole Lamoure tallied 36 assists to pace the Bulldogs (6-9, 0-1).

LaManda Mounts and Sara Gunsaulus combined for 30 kills to lead the Toreros (12-2, 1-0).

Linkday Hunter totaled 14 kills and Brooke Evans added 13 kills to lead Whitworth (2-9) to a 14-16, 15-11, 15-4, 14-16, 15-5 win over Northwest College (4-10) in Kirkland.

Mary Habele and April Clark each had 21 assists for the Pirates.

Men’s soccer

Defending West Coast Conference champion Santa Clara edged visiting Gonzaga 2-1 in the Broncos’ league opener.

Eric Denton scored on a penalty kick to give Santa Clara (5-5-0, 1-0-0) a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.

Kyle Smith stretched the lead to 2-0 with a goal just 39 seconds later.

Jeff McAllister’s header of a Jason Kuska cross pulled the Bulldogs (8-3-0, 0-2-0) to within a goal in the 67th minute.

Community Colleges of Spokane (5-1) scored three second-half goals to upend winless Bellevue (0-6) 3-0 in NWAACC action at Bellevue.

Herbert Barbosa gave the Sasquatch a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 57-minute mark. Shane Turpin and Mladen Blagojevic each scored in a 2-minute span late in the game.

CCS’s Pat Luby had four saves to preserve the shutout.
