Big Inning Propels Gonzaga To Victory

Ben Powell’s two-run single capped a five-run fifth inning and the Gonzaga Bulldogs went on to defeat the Portland Pilots 6-1 in the opening game of the Evans, Craven and Lackie Baseball Invitational tournament Friday at August/A.R.T. Stadium.

Gonzaga’s Matt Siwek pitched seven innings and allowed three hits and one earned run. He struck out eight and walked one.

Forrest Higgins finished the game with two shutout innings.

Kevin Taylor had two hits and two RBIs for the Bulldogs.

Oregon St. 11, Washington St. 9

In the second game, the Beavers scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a one-out homer by Ryan Lipe to defeat the Cougars.

WSU led 8-7 in the seventh after Jason Grove’s grand slam sparked a five-run rally.

Grove went 4 for 4 with five RBIs.

Portland plays WSU today at 11 a.m., followed by an OSU-Gonzaga matchup at 2:30.
