Lc Graduate Completes Exchange Program Abroad

Sebastian Townsend, a Lewis and Clark High School graduate, spent the summer in Argentina as part of the “Face of America Scholarship Program,” sponsored by Youth for Understanding International Exchange.

The scholarship is merit-based, to expand minority involvement in educational exchange opportunities. Finalists were selected on the basis of written essays, teacher recommendations and personal interviews.

Heather McIntyre, a Lewis and Clark High School graduate, received a $300 microbiology alumni scholarship to attend Washington State University, where she is in the honors program.

She is the daughter of Mary and Donald McIntyre.

Thirteen Inland Northwest students have been elected into the Washington State University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa national scholastic society.

The students and their majors are listed alphabetically by hometown:

Cheney: Thane Hisaw, pre-dentistry; and Justin Otto, economics.

Colfax, Wash.: Lars R. Braun, English.

Mead: Jeffrey Haney, biology.

Othello, Wash.: Jennifer Long, history and social studies.

Otis Orchards: Jey Ponti, biology.

Palouse, Wash.: Jill Dunning, sociology.

Spokane: David Crumley, social studies and history education; Cory Davis, English; Derek Duchesne, chemistry; Drew Herion, biochemistry; Tracey Schirman, biology; and Charlotte Yeomans, biochemistry and Spanish.

David Goodwin, Spokane, graduated magna cum laude from Eastern Washington University’s liberal studies program, receiving the outstanding student award. He was a member of Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society.

Catherine Brown Tkacz, Spokane, received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Pew Evangelical Scholars Program for work on her next book, “Susanna Triumphant: The Heroine of Daniel Thirteen from the Bible through the Renaissance.”

Tkacz traveled throughout the United Kingdom and Europe to study depictions of Susanna in stained glass, medieval embroidery, metalwork, wood carvings and stone.

Tkacz is an independent scholar.

Mitch Z. Martin graduated from West Point, where he majored in philosophy, and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Army. He is the son of Judy Martin, Spokane.
