Robert ‘Arki’ Arklander Cataldo

Memorial service for Robert “Arki” Arklander, 82, will be held today at 2 p.m. at Kellogg Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Arklander, who was born in Butte, Mont., died Thursday.

He moved to the Silver Valley in 1972 from Butte and was a shaft repair miner at Bunker Hill.

Mr. Arklander was a member of the Bunker Hill 20-year Club, the Local Steel Workers Union and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Arklander of Cataldo; son, Ray Arklander of Dallas, Oregon; three stepdaughters, Ann Scott of Cataldo, Joann Heiser of Coeur d’Alene and Rachel Johnson of Bayview, Idaho; four stepsons, Mark Heiser of Coeur d’Alene, John Heiser and Dick Johnson, both of Salmon, Idaho, and Andy Johnson of Baker, Ore.; half-brother, Oliver Aloma; 31 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Emma English Kirkland, Wash.

Graveside service for Emma A. English, 89, will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home in Seattle is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. English, who was born in Milan, Wash., died Sep. 17.

She operated the beauty shop at Rockwood Manor for 20 years, and had lived in Spokane for more than 50 years. She moved to Kirkland four years ago.

Her husband of 60 years, Paul English, died in 1990.

Survivors include four daughters, Joan Adams of Bothell, Wash., Joyce Kight of Wenatchee, Janet Burgess of Walla Walla and Judith Sullivan of Renton, Wash.; a sister, Marge Menath of Yuma, Ariz.; two brothers, Don Carter of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and Ron Carter of Post Falls; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Wanneta Beaudette Spokane

Private family service was held for Wanneta A. Beaudette, 82. Interment was at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Beaudette, who was born in Iowa, died Wednesday.

She had been a Spokane resident since 1940, and had worked as a bookkeeper for Fred Jackson and Associates, a hearing aid company. She retired in 1988.

Mrs. Beaudette was a volunteer with the Spokane Public Library.

She is survived by a son, Robert Beaudette of Lynnwood, Wash.; and a grandson.

Vernon Oldham Spokane

Funeral service for Vernon J. “Vern” Oldham, 73, was Friday at Sunrise Church of Christ. Interment followed at Riverside Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Born in Clear Creek, Utah, Mr. Oldham died Wednesday.

He served in the Army during World War II.

He retired in 1982 from the Greenwood and Riverside memorial parks, after 20 years as director of at-need services.

His memberships included Sunrise Church of Christ, Broadway Christian Church in Mesa, Ariz., and the Kiwanis Club of Spokane.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara; a daughter, Marcia Anglesey of Spokane; a son, Greg Oldham of Chicago; two brothers, Arthur Oldham of Hebron, N.D., and Louis Oldham of Moab, Utah; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sunrise Church of Christ.

Eleanor (Esson) Hankins Mollala, Ore.

Graveside service for Eleanor Margaret (Esson) Hankins, 85, will be at 10 a.m. today at Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes in Portland. Graveside inurnment will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pine City Cemetery in Pine City, Wash.

Mrs. Hankins, who was born in Cle Elum, Wash., died Monday.

She graduated from Malden High School, and in 1930 married Robert Hankins.

Mrs. Hankins was a homemaker.

She moved to Portland 15 years ago from Malden.

Mrs. Hankins was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.

Her husband died in 1979.

Survivors include a son, Robert Hankins of Suquamish, Wash.; two daughters, Jolane Bussard of Davenport, Wash., and Jacqueline Newbigging of Canby, Ore.; eight grandchildren and 16 greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

William ‘Bill’ McMurtrey Spokane

Memorial service for William D. “Bill” McMurtrey, 55, will be at 1 p.m. today at Northview Bible Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. McMurtrey, who was born in Tekoa, Wash., died Tuesday.

He worked as a delivery truck driver and also did drywall work.

He is survived by three daughters, Corrina Hipp, and Colette and Kelly McMurtrey; two sons, Troy and Morgan McMurtrey; a brother, Gene McMurtrey; a sister, Linda Field; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Clara Newell-Fetz Coeur d’Alene

Graveside service for Clara Newell-Fetz, 99, will be held today at 3 p.m. at Forest Cemtery in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Newell-Fetz, who was born in Illinois, died Wednesday.

She lived in Illinois until moving to Ritzville, Wash., and Green Bluff.

Mrs. Newell-Fetz moved to the Blue Creek area near Coeur d’Alene in 1913 and was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Church of Truth in Coeur d’Alene, and was instrumental in planning youth and community activities.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Daniel Newell in 1964 and LuVerne Fetz in 1995.

Survivors include a son, James Newell of Coeur d’Alene; two daughters, Helen McFadden and Viola Urbanek, both of Coeur d’Alene; 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 31 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild.

Irene (Johnson) Lobdell Spokane

Private family graveside service for Irene J. (Johnson) Lobdell, 84, will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lobdell, who was born near Grenville, S.D., died Tuesday.

She married Stanley Lobdell in Roslyn, S.D., in 1931. They moved to Spokane in 1937.

She worked as a tailor at Brooks Clothiers in the early 1940s. In 1943 she and her husband both worked at the American Legion Club.

Later, Mrs. Lobdell and her husband moved to Oldtown, Idaho, where they owned the Metro Bar, later renamed Stan’s Bar. They added a cafe, taxicab service and gas station.

In 1955 they moved to Newport, Wash., where they lived until 1963 when they returned to Spokane. She then went to work as a tailor for Harvey’s men’s store at Northtown. She retired in 1980.

Her husband died that same year.

Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Lessig of Spokane; four sons, Stan Lobdell and Jerry Lobdell of Spokane, Roger Lobdell of Coeur d’Alene and William Lobdell of Omak, Wash.; a brother, Henry Johnson of Lewiston; a sister, Violet Kondo of Bothell, Wash.; 20 grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren and 28 greatgrandchildren.

Arthur Vietzke Spokane

Funeral service for Arthur D. Vietzke, 79, will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Vietzke, who was born in Colville, Wash., died Monday.

He served in the Navy Seabees during World War II and had lived in Spokane since 1945.

Mr. Vietzke was an extra in the movie “The Fighting Seabees,” which was filmed in Port Hueneme, Calif.

He worked as a heavy equipment operator.

His memberships included Disabled American Veterans No. 6, Veterans of Foreign War No. 1435, American Legion and the Moose Eagles lodges.

He is survived by his wife, Sophie; a daughter, Arlene Cos, of Florence, Ariz.; a stepson, Andy Tedrow of Spokane; and two sisters, Mildred Veenker of Grants Pass, Ore., and Dorothy Urhauser of Kettle Falls, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

J. Edward Betz Cheney

Funeral service for J. Edward Betz, 96, will be at 1 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-Cheney.

Interment will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Betz, who was born in Mondovi, Wash., died Wednesday.

He owned his own dairy farm in 1930 in Tyler and later moved to a farm near Cheney. He retired in 1990.

Mr. Betz was a member of the Cheney Church of the Nazarene and the Tyler Grange.

His wife of 28 years, Della, died in 1956.

He is survived by a daughter, Belva Wright of Greenacres; three sons, Edward and Vanoy Betz, both of Cheney, and Glen Betz of Modesto, Calif.; two brothers, Gerald and Earl Betz, both of Cheney; a sister, Minnie Monda of Kennewick; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Francis ‘Lloyd’ Willard Spokane

Rosary for Francis A. “Lloyd” Willard, 83, will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Willard, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Thursday.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Willard worked as a typesetter and printer.

He was a member of the Five Mile Grange and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

His wife of 55 years, Violet, died in 1997.

He is survived by two sisters, Kathryn Brown of Bellingham and Grace Ehmke of Spokane.
