Oklahoma St. 42, Texas 16: At Stillwater, Okla., freshman quarterback Tony Lindsay played like a veteran, running for 126 yards and three touchdowns while Oklahoma State’s defense shackled Ricky Williams in a victory over Texas on Saturday.

The Cowboys are 5-0 for the first time in a decade and 2-0 in league play for the first time since 1972.

Williams, who gained 259 yards when Texas (2-2, 0-1) defeated Rice last week, had 4 at halftime and finished with 79 on 16 carries against the nation’s second-ranked rushing defense.

Rice 42, Tulsa 24: At Tulsa, Okla., Benji Wood scored three touchdowns and rushed for 85 yards as the Owls (3-2, 1-1 WAC) ran past the Golden Hurricane (0-4, 0-1).

Texas Tech 35, Baylor 14: At Waco, Texas, Zebbie Lethridge ran 1 yard for a touchdown and threw touchdown passes of 68 and 24 yards to Donnie Hart, leading the Red Raiders (2-2, 1-0 Big 12) past the Bears (1-3, 0-1).

South

Virginia 21, Wake Forest 13: At Charlottesville, Va., Aaron Brooks ran 25 yards for a touchdown with 5-1/2 minutes left and the Cavaliers (2-2, 1-1 ACC) defeated the Demon Deacons (2-3, 1-2) for the 14th consecutive time.

Tulane 41, Army 0: At New Orleans, Shaun King threw three touchdown passes to JaJuan Dawson and the Green Wave (2-2) held the No. 2 rushing offense in the country to 131 yards, 258 less than the Cadets’ (1-4) average.

Clemson 39, Texas-El Paso 7: At Clemson, S.C., Nealon Greene threw three second-half touchdown passes, two to Tony Horne, as the Tigers (3-2) scored 27 consecutive points to romp over the Miners (1-4).

Southern Miss 42, Louisville 24: At Hattiesburg, Miss., Sherrod Gideon had his third consecutive 100-yard receiving game, including a 67-yard touchdown, as the Golden Eagles (3-2, 1-0 Conference USA) defeated the Cardinals (1-5, 0-1) for the 12th time in the last 14 meetings.

Maryland 16, Duke 10: At College Park, Md., Kevin Kopka kicked three field goals and Eric Ogbogu forced a fumble with 3:49 left to preserve the Terrapins’ (2-3, 1-2 ACC) victory over the Blue Devils (2-3, 0-2).

East

West Virginia 48, Rutgers 0: At Morgantown, W.Va., Marc Bulger threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third score before leaving with a hand injury as the Mountaineers (4-1, 2-1 Big East) routed the Scarlet Knights (0-5, 0-3).

Temple 17, Pittsburgh 13: At Philadelphia, Elmarko Jackson ran for two TDs and the Owls (2-4, 2-1), helped by a late defensive stand, defeated the Panthers (3-2, 1-1).

Georgia Tech 42, Boston College 14: At Boston, Joe Hamilton ran 61 yards for a touchdown and threw for another as the Yellow Jackets (3-1) recovered from Quinton Lee’s 76-yard scoring run on the second offensive play and defeated the Eagles (2-3).

Syracuse 56, E. Carolina 0: At Syracuse, N.Y., Donovan McNabb scored two touchdowns and threw for another, leading the Orangemen’s (3-3) rout of the Pirates (1-3).

East Carolina, which had beaten Syracuse two straight times in the Carrier Dome, suffered its second straight shutout.

Midwest

Wisconsin 26, Northwestern 25: At Evanston, Ill, Matt Davenport kicked a 48-yard field goal with 6 seconds left as the Badgers (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) rallied to stun the Wildcats (2-4, 0-2).

Davenport had beaten Indiana 27-26 on a 43-yarder with six seconds to go last week.

Cincinnati 20, Memphis 17: At Cincinnati, Chad Plummer ran 2 yards for the decisive touchdown and Memphis lost two pivotal fumbles in the fourth quarter, helping the Bearcats (4-1, 1-1 Conference USA) defeat the Tigers (1-4, 0-1).

Kansas 20, Oklahoma 17: At Lawrence, Kan., Eric Vann ran 99 yards and Tony Blevins returned a punt 56 yards as the Jayhawks (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) got two big-play TDs and blocked a late field goal to nip the Sooners (2-3, 0-1).

Oklahoma had moved from its own 22 to the Kansas 10 with less than a minute left. Steve Daniels hit an apparent 27-yard field goal to make it 20-20, but the Sooners were called for illegal procedure. Defensive end Dewey Houston then blocked Daniels’ subsequent 33-yard attempt, and the Jayhawks held on for the win.

Missouri 45, Iowa St. 21: At Columbia, Mo., Corby Jones ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more as he led the Tigers (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) past the Cyclones (0-5, 0-2).

Ohio 47, Eastern Michigan 7: At Ypsilanti, Mich., Steve Hookfin rushed for three TDs and 177 yards as the Bobcats (5-1, 3-0 MAC) buried the Eagles (1-4, 1-3).

In other MAC games, it was Akron (1-4, 1-2) over Central Michigan (2-4, 1-2) 53-14; Western Michigan (3-3, 2-2) over Ball State (1-5, 0-3); and Bowling Green (3-3, 3-0) over Northern Illinois (0-5, 0-3) 31-10.

Central Florida 59, Kent 43: At Kent, Ohio, Jose Davis threw for a conference-record 551 yards and six touchdowns in a losing effort as the Knights (2-4) rode Daunte Culpepper’s five-touchdown performance to a victory over the Golden Flashes (1-4).

In other games involving Division I-A independents, it was SW Louisiana (1-5) over Arkansas St. (1-4) 41-38; Alabama-Birmingham (3-3) over Western Kentucky (5-1) 20-16; NE Louisiana (2-4) over NW Louisiana (2-2) 17-7.

West

Colorado State 63, Hawaii 0: At Fort Collins, Colo., Moses Moreno passed for two touchdowns, Jaime Blake ran for two more and Geoff Turner and Darran Hall each scored on punt returns as the Rams (3-2, 1-1 WAC) routed the Rainbow Warriors (0-3, 2-3).

New Mexico 22, SMU 15: At Albuquerque, N.M., Colby Cason tied a school record with five field goals and quarterback Graham Leigh’s quick feet in the third quarter secured the unbeaten Lobos’ (5-0, 2-0 WAC) best start in 52 years as they defeated the Mustangs (1-4, 0-2).
