Cougars Rally To Stop Sun Devils In 4 Games

Washington State rebounded from its first loss of the year to defeat Arizona State 13-15, 15-10, 16-14, 15-6 in a Pacific-10 Conference match Saturday at Tempe.

The sixth-ranked Cougars (17-1, 5-1) had attack percentages of .340 and .324 in the final two games.

WSU lost the opener with a .100 attack percentage. The Cougars have dropped first games in five of six Pac-10 matches.

WSU trailed the second game 8-4 before setter Stephanie Papke entered. The game’s final eight points went to WSU.

ASU served for the third game at 14-7, but the Cougars rallied on three Jennifer Canevari kills.

Canevari finished with 15 kills and 14 digs. Shannon Wyckoff added 16 digs and 10 kills, and Jennifer Stinson 12 kills and 10 digs for WSU, which lost to Arizona on Friday.

Terri Cox totaled 18 kills and 18 digs for the Sun Devils (10-6, 1-4).

Eastern Washington (12-2, 6-0) defeated host Cal State Northridge 15-7, 15-4, 14-16, 15-12 for its second win of the season over the defending Big Sky Conference champions. No details were available.

Theresa Spink’s 29 kills and 15 digs guided Gonzaga (7-9, 1-1) to a 15-9, 12-15, 16-14, 14-16, 15-12 West Coast Conference win at San Francisco (3-13, 0-2).

Nicole Lamoure added 69 assists, Aimee Wilson 21 digs and Nora Grasham 24 kills for the Zags. USF’s Jeanette Sargenti had 26 kills.

Boise State (13-6, 3-1) snapped its 13-match losing streak to Idaho (8-8, 2-2) by defeating the visiting Vandals 15-9, 9-15, 13-15, 15-5, 15-12 in a Big West Conference matchup that drew a BSU record 1,333 fans.

The Broncos trailed the rally-scoring fifth game 6-3 when they took a timeout. Their comeback began with two kills by Becky Meek. Jeri Hymas led the Vandals with 17 kills and a .318 attack percentage.

NAIA 10th-ranked Puget Sound (12-2, 7-0) defeated Whitworth during a Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges mini-tournament at Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma.

Whitworth (3-10, 1-6) bounced back with a 15-11, 7-15, 15-6, 16-14 NCIC win over the host Lutes (8-6, 3-1). Brenda Clinesmith had 42 digs, April Clark 32 assists and Brook Evans 18 kills for the Pirates on the day.
