Viking Runners 16th At Sunfair Invitational

Kira Thompson and Kelsi Luhnow finished fifth in their flights Saturday to lead Coeur d’Alene’s girls to 16th place at the SunFair Invitational in Yakima, Washington’s largest cross country invite.

Thompson completed the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 9 seconds. She competed in flight three, for teams’ No. 5 runners. Luhnow, in flight one, for No. 7 runners, ran 20:43.

Post Falls’ girls placed 20th, topped by Tifany Moate’s 11th-place 20:40 in flight three. PF’s boys placed 27th, as Eric Woods (17:44) in flight two and Jason Kunz (16:53) in flight five both finished 20th.

University’s boys and Newport (Bellevue’s) girls won team titles. Flight-seven winners were Jesse Thomas (15:17) of Mountain View High in Bend, Ore., and Katlin Lafferty (18:23) of Hermiston, Ore.

Charlie Miller’s fourth-place finish led Lake City’s boys to second place at the McCall Invitational.

Miller completed the 5,000 in 17:07. Champion Jacob Powell (16:38) guided Boise to the team title. The Hawks scored 33, 25 fewer than LC.

Centennial scored 34 to win the girls race. Fifth-place LC scored 109, topped by Libby Gerber’s eighth-place showing in 21:02. Champion Susan Warner of Boise ran 19:37.

Volleyball

Great Northern League-leading Colville defeated Panorama League-leading Northwest Christian 15-10, 14-16, 15-10 in the title match of the Lakeland Invitational at Rathdrum.

The host Hawks captured third place by defeating Chewelah 15-9, 15-9.

Post Falls finished 1-2-1 at the tourney and didn’t advance to trophy rounds. Saundra Juhlin of the Trojans totaled 30 kills on the day.

St. Maries (14-2) and Lewiston (3-10) lost to East Valley (5-1) in non-league matches.

Kristin Holleran served 11 consecutive points in the second game, and EV rallied from a 14-6 first-game deficit to defeat St. Maries 16-14, 15-10, 15-13 at EV.

Christie Grochowski had nine kills and four blocks as EV defeated Lewiston 15-5, 15-3, 15-5 at West Valley.

Also at WV, the host Eagles outlasted Lewiston 15-10, 7-15, 16-14, 12-15, 15-11.

Amber Paulson totaled 17 kills and four blocks to guide Bonners Ferry (9-10) to a 15-6, 12-15, 15-7, 15-9 non-league win over visiting Lakeside (10-7).

Sarah Walter added 22 assists and three aces, Kendra Maas nine kills and four aces, and Sarah Stolley 10 kills for the Badgers.

Girls soccer

Bryn Devlin scored with 2 minutes left, allowing visiting Lewiston (2-4-2) to tie first-place Sandpoint at 2 in the North Idaho League.

The Bulldogs (10-0-1, 8-0-1) led 2-1 on Amanda Cravens’ unassisted goal at 55 minutes. Sandpoint is a sliver ahead of idle Coeur d’Alene (8-1-0) in the league chase.

Also in the league, goalkeeper Mariah Talbott registered her eighth shutout as visiting Moscow (9-3, 7-3) defeated Post Falls 4-0.

Moscow’s Holly Davidson scored twice, giving her 16 goals for the year. The Trojans are 2-8-1, 1-7-1.
