No Excuses: Friday Free Day A Chance To Help

Patrice Williamson Rogers

The challenge has been issued. Now it is time for Spokane to act.

Most of you are out of school Friday (it’s a curriculum day), so why not head over to the Ag Trade Center and find out how you can help make Spokane a better place for young people?

There you can become part of “Bridging the GAP: Generations for America’s Promise,” an ongoing effort to directly improve the lives of 3,000 kids by the year 2000.

The daylong minisummit will feature brainstorming sessions, discussion groups, volunteer opportunities and loads of information about resources in the community that are already helping young people.

Another reason for the event is to get youth and adults to interact, says Devon Van Dyne, a junior at University High who has helped plan the summit.

In addition, she says, there will be a community service fair where you can learn about different organizations that need help.

The event, an outgrowth of a national program focusing on the needs of young people, runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students and adults are encouraged to attend any or all of the sessions. Snacks and drinks will be provided, but bring your own lunch.

The event is free, but call the Chase Youth Commission at 625-6440 by Wednesday if you plan to attend.
