Peintre Celebre Triumphs

Compiled From Wire Services

Ridden by Olivier Peslier and trained by Andre Fabre, favorite Peintre Celebre took control with less than three furlongs remaining and won the 1-1/2-mile, $666,000 Arc de Triomphe in 2:23 at Longchamps in Paris, as last year’s winner, Helissio, faded in the stretch and finished sixth.

Pilsudski finished second for the second straight year, about five lengths back. Borgia of Germany was third and Oscar Schindler fourth.

Famed thoroughbred owner Fred Hooper, who turns 100 today, received an early gift when Recommended List drew away through the stretch for a five-length victory in the $83,175 Garden City Stakes for 2-year-olds at Belmont Park in New York.

Doc Martin, the odds-on favorite, was runner-up, a head in front of Sheikh Rattle.

Wild Event emerged from a pack in midstretch and went on to win the $216,250 Keeneland Breeders’ Cup Mile in stakes record time at Lexington, Ky.

The 4-year-old son of Wild Again covered one mile on a firm turf course in 1:34-3/5.
