Obituaries

Wesley Stout Spokane

Visitation for Wesley E. Stout, 91, will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Stout, who was born in Des Moines, Iowa, died Friday.

He graduated from high school in Billings, Mont., and from the University of Washington School of Business.

Mr. Stout owned and operated Spokane Pacific Lines for many years. He later owned and operated the Mobil Service station and U-Haul franchise in downtown Spokane for many years.

In 1986 he married Donna Murrow in Spokane.

He was active with the Republican Party and was host to several presidential candidates over the years and traveled with them locally.

Mr. Stout was a member of the Central Lions Club, the Westerners, Spokane Commercial Travelers, Chi Phi Fraternity, Junior Chamber of Commerce and Spokane Elks Lodge and was a founding member of Heritage Congregational Church of Spokane.

His first wife of 52 years, Irene (Breum) Stout, died in 1983.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Susanne Thomasson of Chattaroy and Kathryn Gray of Spokane; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage Congregational Church or Habitat for Humanity.

Melvin Bailey Spokane

Private family inurnment service for Melvin L. Bailey, 85, will be held at Pines Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Bailey, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.

He moved to the Wilbur, Wash., area when he was five years old. As a boy, he helped on his father’s fruit farm.

In 1948 he married Ruth Decker. She died in 1986.

He married Genevieve Warner in 1992.

Mr. Bailey worked at White Pine Sash Company. In the 1940s he gave flying lessons to small-plane pilots. He also built and remodeled houses, and owned a small dairy for a short time.

He worked as a school bus driver and maintenance man in the the East Valley School District for 14 years. He retired in 1972.

He was a member of the Greater Spokane Organ Club.

Survivors include his wife; two stepsons, Lowell Starr of San Jose, Calif., and Ronald Starr of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Roberta Starr of Tacoma; and a sister, Grace Hopkinson of N.M.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

Leo Armstrong Spokane

Memorial service for Leo V. Armstrong, 88, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements and cremation.

Mr. Armstrong, who was a 48-year resident of Spokane, died Friday.

He was born in Brownlee, Saskatchewan.

He was superintendent of Mount Spokane State Park for two years and also owned and operated Armstrong Building Service and Allied Restaurant Supply for many years.

Mr. Armstrong was associated with All World Travel for the past few years.

He was a member of the North Hill Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies and El Katif Shrine.

His survivors include his wife of 67 years, Violette; a daughter, Joan Stueve of Spokane; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Emma Ahner Sandpoint

Service for Emma Jean Ahner, 73, was Saturday at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Mrs. Ahner, who was born in Oklahoma, died Wednesday.

She moved to Sandpoint at the age of 3 and attended Bonner County schools.

Mrs. Ahner made her home in Dover and had worked as a caregiver for the elderly for many years.

She was a member of the Dover Sewing Club and the Eagles Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon.

Survivors include seven children, Willena Scott of Everett, Dorothy of Spokane, Ernest Ahner, Corky Goulette and Bruce Ahner, all of Sandpoint, Janice of Florida, and Dale Ahner of Marysville, Wash.; two sisters, Alice Jenkins of Naples, Idaho, and Teresa Deshon of Sandpoint; 25 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.

Henry Sciuchetti Osburn

Graveside service for Henry J. Sciuchetti, 86, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Osburn Cemetery. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sciuchetti, who was born in Harrison, died Saturday.

He had lived in Shoshone County since 1924 and graduated from Kellogg High School in 1931.

He served with the Idaho National Guard during World War II.

Mr. Sciuchetti moved to Osburn in 1941 and had worked as a refrigerator repairman and salesman for Maytag.

He was a member of the Wallace Eagles Aerie and the Steel Workers Union.

Survivors include his companion, Elizabeth “Ellie” Fisk of Osburn; a brother, Jack Tam of Spokane; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Wanda Harvey Spokane

Memorial service for Wanda O. Harvey, 65, will be at 2 p.m. today at First Church of the Open Bible. Private inurnment will precede at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Harvey, who was born in Algore, Ark., died Wednesday.

She had been a resident of Spokane since 1967 and was active in real estate for 31 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Deborah Harvey of Spokane; three brothers, Charles Querry of Oroville, Calif., Wilbur Querry of Salem, Ore., and Leon Querry of Heber Springs, Ark.; three sisters, Peggy Crandel of Las Vegas, Patricia Nute of Eugene, Ore., and Mildred Brown of Porterville, Calif.; and two grandsons.

Judith Gray Spokane

Funeral service for Judith Lynn Gray, 58, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Berean Bible Church. Interment will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Gray, who was born in Orofino, Idaho, died Thursday.

She worked in the bakery business for 11 years.

Mrs. Gray was active in Bible study fellowship and jail ministry.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Al; three sons, Allan, Kelley and Kurt Gray; a brother, Mike Richardson of Orofino; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ogden Hall, the Union Gospel Mission or KMBI radio station.

Geraldine Bauer Spokane

Mass for Geraldine A. Bauer, 92, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Born in Idaho, Mrs. Bauer died Saturday.

She worked as a schoolteacher for several years.

Her husband, Henry Bauer, died in 1993.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathie Skeman of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Geraldine ‘Gerry’ Howe Post Falls

Graveisde service for Geraldine Kay “Gerry” Howe, 56, was held Monday at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Howe, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Friday.

She spent most of her life in the Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls area and had lived in California from 1960-64.

Mrs. Howe had worked as a waitress at Bud’s Drive-In in St. Maries, the Gateway in Harrison and the Brunswick Cafe in Coeur d’Alene.

She also worked at First Security Bank in St. Maries as a teller and new accounts officer and served as a loan officer at Northern State Bank in Post Falls.

Survivors include her husband, Melvin; son, David Howe of Council, Idaho; two daughters, Lori Howe of Post Falls and Rhonda Walker of Spokane; five brothers, John and Dean Kraack, both of Medimont, Idaho, Rich and Pete Kraack, both of Oregon, and Mike Kraack of Coeur d’Alene; three sisters, Frances Plemmons of Clarkston, Wash., Diane Halverson of Spokane and Beverly Kamstra of Chattaroy; and two grandchildren.

Jake Riffel Newport, Wash.

No service will be held for Jake Wiens Riffel, 91. Sherman Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Riffel, who was born in Buhler, Kan., died Wednesday.

In 1927 he married Bertha Dyck in Gossel, Kans.

He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in Kansas and as a self-employed contractor. He also owned and operated a hardware and sporting goods store.

Mr. Riffel moved in 1954 to Spring Valley near Newport, where he was a logger. He also was a tradesman in the ranching industry before retiring.

He was a member of the Spring Valley Mennonite Church.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jack Riffel of Spokane, Charles Riffel of Oldtown, Idaho, and Guy Riffel of Diamond Lake, Wash.; 10 grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren.

Heather Schafer Spokane

Visitation for Heather L. Schafer, 19, will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Miss Schafer, who was a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Saturday as a result of a traffic accident.

She graduated from Mead High School in 1996 with honors and had attended Spokane Falls Community College for the past two years.

Miss Schafer had worked at the Albertsons store at 37th and Grand Boulevard and at Northgate for the past three years.

Survivors include her parents, Steve and Vicki Schafer; a sister, Jennifer Shafer; and her grandmother, Dorothy Schafer, all of Spokane.

Evelyn Renwick Spokane

Private family graveside service will be held for Evelyn A. Renwick, 88. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Aberdeen, S.D., Mrs. Renwick died Wednesday.

She worked as a secretary for James S. Black and had been a resident of Spokane since 1948.

She was a member of Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ.

Mrs. Renwick is survived by her husband, Howard; a foster daughter, Joyce McNamee of Spokane; and two sisters, Selma Marr of Aberdeen and Loretta Milstead of Mobile, Ala.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ.

Raymond Howard Greenacres

Graveside service for Raymond Howard, 75, will be at 11 a.m. today at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Howard, who was a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Thursday.

He graduated from Rogers High School and served in the Army during World War II.

He owned and trained thoroughbred race horses for 50 years, and also worked for various construction contractors.

He is survived by his wife, Luella; a daughter, Janice McDonald of Oklahoma City; a son, Kenneth Howard of Pleasanton, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Carol Reynolds of Spokane and Linda LeMay of Otis Orchards; six stepsons, Gary Hathaway and Ted Davis, both of Spokane, Michael Hathaway of Keizer, Ore., Bill Kelling of Deer Park, David Davis of Ione, Wash., and Gene Davis of Bellevue, Wash.; five grandchildren and numerous stepgrandchildren.

David Forsyth Spokane

Visitation for David Ronald Forsyth, 87, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Liberty Lake Chapel.

Mr. Forsyth, who was born in Magrath, Alberta, died Saturday.

He was a professional calf roper for 25 years and also was an ironworker. Mr. Forsyth was a member of the Saddle Warmers Horse Club and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Liberty Lake Chapel. He also was a scoutmaster He is survived by his wife, Alice; two daughters, Ronna McKinley of Colbert and Connie Carothers of Greenacres; two sons, Ronald Forsyth of Seattle and Dennis Forsyth of Elk River, Minn.; two brothers, five sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughters.

Marie Bonnell Spokane

Vigil service for Marie Bonnell, 92, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Bonnell, who was born in Bapaume, France, died Friday.

She was active in the French underground during World War II and was decorated by the Allied Forces and the French government.

Mrs. Bonnell moved to Canada in 1946 and then to Spokane in 1952.

She worked as a seamstress for Zukor’s and Bernard’s.

Her husband, Louis Bonnell, died in 1965.

Survivors include four daughters, Andree Cruise of Greenacres, Mimi James of Langley, B.C., Rosi Workland of Seattle and Marie Challender of Spokane; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Donna Borden Spokane

Memorial service for Donna M. Borden, 62, will be at 2 p.m. today at Valley Church of Christ. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Borden, who was born in Helena, died Saturday. She had been a resident of Spokane for 61 years.

Mrs. Borden worked for Columbia Lighting for several years.

She is survived by her husband, Richard; two daughters, Kim Castor of Spokane and Kelly Higel of Greenacres; a son, Richard Borden of Hill Air Force Base, Utah; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ella Klee Pullman

Graveside funeral service for Ella Klee, 94, was Monday at the Colfax (Wash.) Cemetery. Interment followed. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax was in charge of the arrangements.

Ms. Klee, who was born in Touchet, Wash., died Thursday.

She moved to Colfax in 1908 and worked for the family dairy business. She moved to Pullman in 1964.

She worked as a caregiver, baby sitter and Bible teacher.

Ms. Klee was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Krom of Colfax.
