College football

Eastern Washington’s first defeat cost the Eagles five spots in the ESPN/USA Today NCAA Division I-AA media poll.

The Eagles (4-1), ranked No. 14 when they lost 17-7 at Montana State on Saturday, are 19th in this week’s poll. EWU fell out of the Sports Network poll and is 20th in the Football Gazette weekly rankings.

Montana State’s Jeff Alexander, who had a 23-yard pass interception for the back-breaking touchdown against EWU, shares defensive player of the week honors in the Big Sky Conference.

Also honored was Ryland Wickman of Cal State Sacramento, who had 16 tackles, three for losses, in a 23-19 win over Idaho State.

Offensive honors went to Charles Dunn, a Portland State freshman, who ran a school-record 41 times for 250 yards and three touchdowns in a 26-13 win over Cal State Northridge.

Weber State’s Scott Shields won the special teams award for the third time afer kicking five field goals and three extra points in a 36-23 win over fourth-ranked Northern Arizona.

Stanford’s Anthony Bookman, who ran for 142 yards and two TDs in a 33-15 win over Notre Dame, is the Pac-10 player of the week on offense.

Washington senior Jerry Jensen is the defensive player. He had 13 tackles and two sacks in a 26-14 win over Arizona State.

And Chris Sailer of UCLA, who hit his ninth straight field goal and six extra points in a 66-3 rout of Houston, is the special team’s player.

The University of Idaho had two of the Big West players of the week.

Quarterback Brian Brennan was chosen on offense after completing 34 of 49 passes for 396 yards and two TDs in a 30-17 win over North Texas. Linebacker James Durrough was the defensive choice. He had five tackles, four for losses, including two sacks.

College women’s soccer

After losing its first three matches in its first season, Eastern Washington extended its unbeaten streak to three with a 1-1 tie over Northwest Nazarene on Monday.

Nicole Davis scored for EWU (1-3-2) at 72:20 off a corner kick to earn the Eagles the tie against the NAIA Division II school, also in its first season of soccer.

Idaho prep volleyball

Mullan pulled out a 15-7, 14-16, 15-13 North Star League volleyball win at Lakeside, and, as the score would indicate, it wasn’t easy.

After winning the first game, Mullan looked ready to sweep with a 14-9 lead in Game 2 when the Knights rallied behind Sunni Mullen and Michelle Kelley. Polly Hodgson served the last four ponits.

In Game 3, Mullen broke a 10-all tie to lead 13-10, but the Knights tied it at 13 before the Tigers won it.
