Detroit Raises Flags, Hopes

From Wire Reports

First they raised the banner, then the Detroit Red Wings raised some more hopes in their home opener Wednesday night.

Mathieu Dandenault, Viacheslav Fetisov and Vyacheslav Kozlov scored for the Red Wings, who celebrated last spring’s Stanley Cup championship with a 3-1 win over the Dallas Stars.

It was the third straight win for the Red Wings, who opened the season with two games on the road. They have outscored their opponents 14-4.

Eight new banners were raised to the rafters during a lengthy and loud ceremony before the game. There was one banner to celebrate each of the Red Wings’ Stanley Cup championships.

Despite the jubilation, however, the thoughts of the organization and players clearly were with defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov and massage therapist Sergei Mnatsakanov, who remain hospitalized from a June 13 limousine crash. The two sustained massive brainstem injuries.

Fetisov sustained chest injuries in that crash.

Doctors say Konstantinov cannot speak or walk independently and Mnatsakanov may not walk again.

On the ice

Adam Oates reached the 1,000-point mark with three goals and two assists as the Washington Capitals won their fourth straight game, a 6-3 road victory over the New York Islanders. Oates has 1,004 points (261 goals).

Montreal’s Andy Moog pulled off a rare feat, shutting out the Pittsburgh Penguins on their home ice, 3-0.

Doug Weight scored two goals, including the first successful penalty shot against New York goaltender Mike Richter, as the Edmonton Oilers tied the visiting Rangers 3-3.

Panthers center out

Florida Panthers center Rob Niedermayer is sidelined by a concussion sustained during a loss to the Philadelphia Flyers last week, and the team isn’t sure when he’ll return.

Signings

The Chicago Blackhawks signed defenseman Eric Weinrich to a multi-year contract. … The San Jose Sharks agreed to contract terms with center Jeff Friesen, the club’s second all-time leading scorer.
