Joseph ‘Ed’ Mellen St. Maries

Joseph Edward “Ed” Mellen, 64, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mr. Mellen, who was born in Emmett, Idaho, died Tuesday.

He grew up in St. Maries and graduated from high school there in 1951. He served with the Air Force from 1952-56, including during the Korean War.

Mr. Mellen later attended Eastern Washington State College in Cheney in 1958.

He worked for the Postal Service in St. Maries and served numerous positions, including interim postmaster, retiring after 32 years of service.

After his retirement, Mr. Mellen worked at Timber Lanes Bowling Alley and was active in coaching Little League and Babe Ruth baseball, and girls youth basketball and volleyball.

He was a volunteer emergency medical technician and firefighter with the St. Maries Fire Department and was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and worked the St. Maries senior meal site.

Mr. Mellen was a member of the St. Maries Bowling Association and the St. Maries First Baptist Church, and a former member of the St. Maries Kiwanis Club, St. Maries Chamber of Commerce and the Benewah County Civil Defense Program.

He was a Benewah Sheriff’s office dispatcher and Hospice volunteer and a former member of the Paul Bunyan Days Committee.

Survivors include three sons, Barry Mellen of Spokane, Rob Mellen of St. Maries and Tom Mellen of Boise; a daughter, Louisa Meyer of Spokane; a brother, Spud Mellen; and 12 grandchildren.

Vernon Kingsley St. Maries

Memorial service for Vernon F. Kingsley, 103, will be held today at 11 a.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Mr. Kingsley, who was born in Kansas, died Monday.

He grew up in Kansas and worked on the family farm before moving to St. Maries in 1912.

Mr. Kingsley had served with the Navy aboard the USS Alabama from 1917-19 and also served in World War II.

After his military service, he lived in Grays Harbor on the Washington coast, where he was a logger and worked with the U.S. Coast Guard.

Mr. Kingsley worked as a painter in San Francisco during the 1930s and returned to St. Maries in 1938.

He logged in St. Maries for 25 years before retiring and becoming a house painter.

He was a member of the St. Maries Veterans of Foreign Wars and played the fiddle.

Mr. Kingsley was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 1954.

Survivors include four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Gladys Bishop Spokane

No service will be held for Gladys Bishop. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Bishop, 71, died Tuesday.

She was born in Farmington, Wash., and lived most of her life in Moses Lake.

Mrs. Bishop worked as a dietary aide at a local hospital and moved to Spokane seven years ago.

She is survived by a son, Randall Bishop of Spokane; a daughter, Rowena Amercrombie of Sequim, Wash.; a brother, Dan Fisher of Oakesdale, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Katherine Remington Moscow, Idaho

Service for Katherine Ann Remington, 24, will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Moscow. Burial will follow at Moscow Cemetery. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Remington, who was born in Utah, died Sunday from complications caused by diabetes.

She had lived in Rexburg, Idaho, before moving to Moscow in 1977, where she graduated from Moscow High School in 1991.

Ms. Remington went on to attend the University of Idaho and Lewis-Clark State College and was studying child development and nutrition.

She had worked at the Bonanza Restaurant in Moscow and recently worked at Chang Sing Restaurant and Andrew’s Hallmark Shop.

Ms. Remington was a member of the Natural Helpers Group at Moscow High School and spent time at Camp Lutherhaven on Lake Coeur d’Alene. She counseled high school students.

She was a member of the American Diabetes Association and an insulin pump support group, and volunteered with an AIDS support group.

She was preceded in death by her father, Tom, earlier this year.

Survivors include her mother, Margaret of Moscow; two brothers, Tom Remington of Orofino, Idaho, and Wade Remington of Moscow; a sister, Janine Remington of Boise; her grandmother, Helen Remington of Filer, Idaho; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Harry Schulz Spokane

Visitation for Harry F. Schulz, 96, will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Schulz, a 90-year Spokane resident, died Saturday.

He was born in Merrill, Wis., and moved to Bellingham a year later. He and his family moved to Spokane when he was 6 years old.

Mr. Schulz worked for 48 years for Railway Express Co. He began with his horse and wagon delivering freight and later became a driver for 20 years. In 1940 he became a mechanic working on the equipment until his retirement in 1968.

His first wife of 40 years, Eunice Schulz died in 1963, and his second wife of 12 years, Ruth Schulz, died in 1979.

He is survived by three sons, William and Larry Schultz, both of Spokane, and John Schultz of Davenport, Wash.; a daughter, Rose Elizabeth Bowen of Coeur d’Alene; a sister, Lydia Anderson of Spokane; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Merelda (Sherwood) Davis Hayden, Idaho

Memorial service for Merelda Teresa Josephine (Sherwood) Davis, 80, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church in Hayden. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Davis, who was born in South Dakota, died Sunday from cancer.

She moved to Silverton, Idaho, many years ago and owned the A & W Restaurant before retiring and moving to Hayden.

Mrs. Davis was a member of the local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dean Sherwood in 1983.

Survivors include her husband, Chester; three children, Wallace, Amanda and Theone; a brother, Ernest Grandpre; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Kenneth “Ken” Kramer Hayden Lake

Memorial service for Kenneth “Ken” Kramer, 78, will be held Saturday at noon at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kramer, who was born in British Columbia, Canada, died Wednesday.

He grew up and attended school in upstate New York and learned to fly airplanes as a teenager.

Mr. Kramer graduated from Syracuse University School of Engineering in 1951 and went on to serve with the Army Air Corps as a cargo transport pilot during World War II in China, Burma and India.

He later worked as an aeronautical engineer and experimental test pilot in California before retiring and moving to Nevada in 1979.

Mr. Kramer moved to Hayden Lake in 1993 and was a fellow in the society of Experimental Test Pilots and served as president of the society in 1972-73.

He received a master gardner degree from the University of Idaho and was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine; five sons, Kim and Marc Kramer, both of Utah, Mark Kramer of Duvall, Wash., Matthew Kramer of Colorado, and Kurt Kramer of California; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Barbara Wilkinson Twin Lakes, Idaho

Memorial service for Barbara Elliott Wilkinson, 66, will be Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. at the Rathdrum United Methodist Church. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wilkinson, who was born in Illinois, died Sunday.

She attended Rockford College in Illinois and Washington University in St. Louis. Mrs. Wilkinson had lived in Wisconsin before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1969. She moved to the Rathdrum area in 1990.

Mrs. Wilkinson was a member of the United Methodist Church of Rathdrum, where she served on the board of trustees.

She was past president of the P.E.O., the Coeur d’Alene Women’s Club and the Inland Empire Girl Scout Council.

Mrs. Wilkinson was a member of and volunteer at Family Planning, Day Treatment, Panhandle Health, United Way and TESH.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Gerald Wilkinson; a son, Robert Wilkinson of Coeur d’Alene; a daughter, Nancy Wilkinson of California; a stepsister, Zoe Jones of Nebraska; a stepbrother, Jack Cody of Illinois; and her stepmother, Leila Elliott of Illinois.

Jerry Ford Spokane

Visitation for Jerry L. Ford, 62, will be from noon to 7 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Heritage Funeral Home. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Ford, who was born in Pale City, Ala., died Monday.

He worked for Central Pre-Mix for many years.

Mr. Ford was a member of Operating Engineers Local No. 370.

He is survived by two sons, Lloyd Ford of Spokane and Anthony Ford of Colorado; a daughter, Yvonne Godwin of Spokane; four brothers, Joe and Willard Ford, both of Haines City, Fla., Leonard Ford of Cunningham, Texas, and Ray Ford of Arab, Ala.; two sisters, Rubynell Sanford of Paris, Texas, and Byrdie Allen of Joppa, Texas; and nine grandchildren.

Clyde Mansfield Post Falls

Memorial service for Clyde D. “Chief” Mansfield, 65, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Hall on state Highway 41 in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mansfield, who was born in Minnesota, died Sunday.

He had worked as a construction laborer and was a member of the labor union before retiring.

Mr. Mansfield moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1972 and was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Naval Reserve for several years.

He was a member of the Post Falls American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Aerie.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; two daughters, Idella Mansfield and Dawnell Berg, both of Post Falls; one stepson, Chris Marty of Texas; two sisters, Judy Roberts and Marylin Manny, both of Montana; and two brothers, Jim Mansfield of West Virginia and Pete Mansfield of Alaska.

Louis Vidmar Spokane

Memorial service for Louis C. Vidmar, 80, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Cremation Society of Washington. A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash.

Mr. Vidmar, who was born in Minnesota, died Sunday.

He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression and then in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Mr. Vidmar was stationed at Felts Field and ended his service in 1946.

He worked for Inland Empire Paper Co. for more than 30 years.

He is survived by a son, Roger Vidmar of Bothell, Wash.; a daughter, Kristine McBride of Moscow, Idaho; two brothers, Stan Vidmar of Minnesota and Frank Vidmar of California; a sister, Faye Vidmar of Minnesota; and two grandchildren.

Lylian Evanson Chattaroy

Funeral service for Lylian Evanson, 86, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash. Interment will be held at Ritzville Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Evanson, who was born in Centralia, Wash., died Monday.

In 1932 she married Roy Evanson and they moved to Sequim, Wash., where they were wheat farmers.

They moved to Benge in 1947 and she was a homemaker.

Mrs. Evanson and her husband moved to Chewelah, Wash., in 1992 and then later to Chattaroy.

Her husband died in 1996.

She is survived by a daughter, Carol Kennedy of Valley, Wash.; a brother, Wilbur Hayne of Raymond, Wash.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Detmer Burma Spokane

Visitation for Detmer D. Burma, 86, will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Rock Chapel in Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Burma, who was born in Ludlow, S.D., died Tuesday.

A rancher, he was a resident of Spokane for 17 years.

Survivors include two brothers, George Burma of Sacramento and Harm Burma of Spokane; and two sisters, Grace Barnes and Marian Gumm, both of Spokane.
