We’re Holding Out For A Portrait On Black Velvet

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

The first Musical tribute to the late Princess Diana was issued by Elton John. Rest assured it won’t be the last.

The latest, in fact, comes from the Netherlands. Pop singer Andre Hazes’ song “Farewell” should be available next week, according to the Dutch newspaper Trouw. It goes like this:

“You are now gone, it is over.

“This is the end, it is finished.

“I didn’t know you, yet you were with me.

“You were very beautiful, you were a woman full of life.

“It does not matter what others wrote about you.

“You have given so much of your life.”

Hazes has been called the “Dutch tear-jerker king.”

Loose talk

Whoopi Goldberg on the African-American magazine Essence lightening her skin color for a cover photo (as reported by the Miami Herald): “It’s amazing to me how much self-hate is still out there.”

What, did HE pave paradise, put up a parking lot?

Jackson Browne turns 49 today.

Expect to see it on the big screen soon

Director Rob Reiner feels passionate about early childhood development. He is lobbying to put a tobacco tax on the California ballot to raise $900 million annually for children’s programs. “My job is to keep this on the front burner as a national issue,” Reiner said Tuesday. “I’m going to keep the drumbeat going. I promise you.”

Yeah, those folks in Palo Alto are just too sensitive

Speaking at UC Berkeley, NBC newscaster Tom Brokaw said one of his daughters attended Berkeley, another Stanford. Reports the San Francisco Chronicle, Brokaw compared it to one being in the Grateful Dead, the other in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. “That always goes over well at Berkeley,” he said, “but not so well down there.”

They won’t take money from Kitty Kelley either

Say what he wants, Andrew Morton hasn’t convinced everyone that his book “Diana, Her True Story” is an authentic reflection of the late princess’ life. The British Red Cross turned down an donation offer of $500,000 by Morton’s publisher. “The society feels that being associated with this book would not be appropriate,” read the official statement.

And now for something completely similar…

Re. the Andrew Morton item immediately above: When “Diana, the True Story” was first published, the American company Martin Poll Films bought rights to it and made a four-hour miniseries. Now comes word that the company has obtained rights to the revised edition.

Kissing for money, what a celebrity racket

The offer, from “Tonight” host Jay Leno, was $5,000. It was made to Andre Agassi and Brooke Shields. It entailed a kiss. And they complied. Shades of “Indecent Proposal.” But don’t misunderstand. They kissed each other. And the money went to charity.
