Compiled From Wire Services

Brad Faxon’s World Match Play quarterfinal match in Virginia Water, England, against Colin Montgomerie is being cast as “Ryder Cup II.” Faxon isn’t buying it.

“It’s not going to get the Ryder Cup back to the States, Faxon said after he advanced with a 2 and 1 victory over Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland, another Ryder Cup competitor.

Faxon, Frank Nobilo, Ian Woosnam and Vijay Singh reached today’s quarterfinals. Phil Mickelson lost on the second playoff hole to Nobilo.

Woosnam will take on winner Ernie Els in the quarterfinals while Faxon faces Montgomerie, Nobilo plays Nick Price and Singh plays Steve Elkington.

Duffy Waldorf shot an 8-under-par 63 that gave him a one-shot lead after the first round of the Michelob Championship in Williamsburg, Va. Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett was tied for fourth at 66.
