Hosta Society Holding Meeting

From Staff And Wire Reports

What do gardeners do when the ground freezes? They go to meetings to talk gardening, of course.

The Spokane Hosta Society will hold its quarterly meeting Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Manito Park meeting room (just east of the conservatory.

Alan Tower, the owner of Tower Perennial Gardens, will give a slide lecture which includes the Missouri Botanical garden. It’s free and open to the public.

Go to class

Those wanting to delay actually starting home repairs can go to a free workshop on do-it-yourself chores this weekend at any HomeBase store.

The lineup Saturday: Installing ceramic floor tile at 10 a.m., installing rain gutters at 11 a.m., repotting plants at noon and installing pre-hung doors at 1 p.m.

Sunday’s workshops are: Installing laminate flooring at 11 a.m., repairing drywall at noon, installing a toilet at 1 p.m. and installing security lighting at 2 p.m.

The best-laid plans…

Every well-furnished garden these days seems to have a butterfly hibernation box. The wooden houses have slits to allow overwintering butterflies to find shelter.

But do they work? The newsletter Butterfly Gardeners’ Quarterly reports that an Eagle scout in Pennsylvania built and monitored 40 boxes. Spiders, wasps, gypsy moths, ants, even a mouse had moved in. Alas, no butterflies.
