Cougars Win Pac-10 Opener

Washington State freshman Deka DeWitt scored a pair of unassisted goals to help the Cougars defeat Oregon State 2-0 Friday in a Pacific-10 women’s soccer opener at Pullman.

DeWitt, who was honored as the Pac-10 player of the week Monday, earned the first multiple-goal match of her career.

Her first score came in the 40th minute when she picked up a loose ball in the box and hammered a shot to the upper-right corner. DeWitt’s second goal, her sixth of the season, came 5 minutes into the second half.

She beat an Oregon State defender, dribbled inside the box and fired a shot from 17 yards into the lower-right corner of the goal.

“We know how important the first Pac-10 game is and we came out tense at the start, but once we got the first goal we were able to settle in and work out the kinks,” said DeWitt.

WSU freshman goalkeeper Shannon Wilson had four saves for her second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season.

WSU plays at home again Sunday with a noon match against Oregon.
