Ten years ago: Thousands of homosexual rights activists marched through Washington to demand protection from discrimination and more federal money for AIDS research and treatment.

Five years ago: President Bush, Democrat Bill Clinton and independent candidate Ross Perot met for the first of three debates, this one at Washington University in St. Louis.

One year ago: Roman Catholic Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo and Jose Ramos-Horta of East Timor won the Nobel Peace Prize for their pro-democracy efforts in troubled East Timor.
