The Ticker A Look Back At The Past Week On Wall Street

WHAT’S HOT

The week’s high performance awards go to SCM Microsystems and Dallas Semiconductor, both of which made significant gains at the end of the week. On Thursday, SCM Microsystems soared $6.12 to $31.50 on the NASDAQ, then reteated some Friday to close at $29.75. Friday’s close was more than double Tuesday’s price of $13 when the Los Gatos, Calif.-based smartcard technology concern sold 3.37 million shares in an initial public offering. On Friday, Dallas Semiconductor surged $6.06 to finish the week at $55 a share. The Dallas-based chip maker reported third-quarter earnings that topped analysts’ estimates.

WHAT’S NOT

Wall Street’s underachievers this week included Silicon Graphics, which on Monday tumbled $8.81 to close at $18.06 a share and finished the week at $17.19 on the NYSE. The drop came after the Mountain View, Calif.-based computer maker warned it would post an unexpected loss for its first quarter. … Kulicke & Soffa Industries of Willow Grove, Pa., dropped $7.81 to finish at $39.31 a share on Monday after the company warned that it would report disappointing first-quarter results. The stock closed on Friday at $38.62 on the NASDAQ.
