Mountain climbing

An American tourist died Sept. 6 while climbing Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, and unconfirmed reports attributed the death to altitude sickness.

The victim, a 26-year-old Colorado man, was the third American to die this year on Kilimanjaro, according to an official with the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The death occurred near the summit, which is at 19,300 feet. The climber was traveling with 10 others on a trip organized by African Environment Tours.
