Kurdish rebels attacked a military post near Turkey’s border with Iran today and nine soldiers and eight rebels were killed, Turkey’s Anatolia news agency said.
In other clashes in the region over the past two days, security forces killed 22 Kurdish guerrillas, the regional governor’s office said.
Saturday’s attack comes during a major Turkish military operation in northern Iraq to wipe out rebel bases there. The offensive, now in its third week, involves about 16,000 troops.
The rebels are fighting for greater autonomy for Kurds in eastern Turkey.
