Doug Flutie of the Toronto Argonauts broke the Canadian Football League touchdown pass record, throwing for his 39th and 40th scores of the season as the Argonauts defeated the Montreal Alouettes 28-21.

Unbeaten British fighter Naseem Hamed (27-0) made the eighth successful defense of his WBO featherweight title, stopping Jose Badillo (20-2) of Puerto Rico on a TKO in the seventh round at Sheffield, England.

Italy’s Alessandra Cappellotto won the gold medal at the World Cycling Championship’s women’s road race in San Sebastian, Spain. Cappellotto raced the 67 miles in 2 hours, 44 minutes, 37 seconds.

Robin Lee, an Olympic skater who became the youngest junior national figure skating champion at age 12, died of bone cancer in Minneapolis. He was 77.

Countess Diana, ridden by Shane Sellers, furthered her claim to the 2-year-old filly championship with a 2-1/4-length victory at Keeneland in the $430,000 Alcibiades Stakes in Lexington, Ky.

Benchmark rallied in the stretch to edge Score Quick by 1-3/4 lengths in the $248,700 Goodwood Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Santa Anita’s Oak Tree meet in Arcadia, Calif.
