Former American Basketball Association star Walt Simon, 56, has died in Louisville, Ky., after a long battle with cancer.

Simon played in the ABA for eight years with the New Jersey Americans, New York Nets and Kentucky Colonels. He was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame this spring. He had his best year with the Nets in 1968-69, when he averaged 21.1 points and scored 18 in the ABA All-Star game. Simon averaged 11.8 points over a 540-game career.

Mark Tate set a world hydroplane record at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in winning the JN Automotive Hydrofest. He drove Close Call to a record average speed of 154.2 mph in the 12.5-mile, winner-take-all final heat to earn his fourth Unlimited Hydroplane Racing Association season drivers’ title. Mark Evans of Wenatchee was second at 150.3 mph in PICO American Dream’s backup boat.

Laurent Brochard of France won the World Cycling men’s road race in San Sebastian, Spain, covering 159 miles in 6 hours, 16 minutes, 48 seconds.
