Egghead, Mitsubishi Ink Distribution Deal

Egghead Computer has reached an agreement to be the first retail distributor of a powerful new Mitsubishi mini-notebook computer.

Mitsubishi Electronic’s AMiTY CN is a 2.4-pound mini-notebook computer with 16 megabits of RAM, upgradable to 48 megabits, a 1.2 gigabit hard drive, a 7.5-inch LCD display, and keyboard in a 1.34-inch enclosure. Built-in ports enable expansion to full desktop functionality.

“Nothing else exists in the domestic market today with this power in this form factor,” according to James F. Kalasky, Egghead’s vice president of merchandising. Kalasky said in a news release that Egghead has purchased “virtually all of Mitsubishi’s production for North America for the rest of 1997.”

Egghead will distribute the computer through its 86 retail stores, its direct mail catalog and its newly-revamped Web commerce site.

The AMiTY CN marks Mitsubishi’s entry into the multibillion-dollar U.S. market for general purpose notebook computers.
