Nic Honors Indians With Library Alcove

North Idaho College dedicated a library alcove to the school’s Native American students Wednesday.

The reading and study area in the library will highlight the diversity of cultures in North Idaho and will be named by the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

The library dedication is part of a nine-point agreement between the college and the Coeur d’Alene Tribe that, among other things, calls for increasing the library’s collection of Native American literature.

“Libraries are the ultimate learning resource and making specialized collections for local interests adds depth and diversity to the services of the library,” said Idaho Board of Education President Judith Meyer, in a letter to the NIC Learning Resources Advisory Committee.

NIC’s library holds 850 titles in the area of Native American history, social life, customs, religion and contemporary literature. The library also subscribes to two tribal newspapers, The Coeur d’Alene Council Fires and the Char-Koosta News, as well as the Smithsonian quarterly, Native People.
