Stage Set For Mead, U-Hi Tilt

GSL girls soccer

University and Mead scrapped for wins Wednesday in preparation for their first-place showdown.

U-Hi defeated Gonzaga Prep 2-1 by scoring the winner at 78 minutes. Mead used a pair of early goals to defeat Lewis and Clark 2-0.

Mead (13-0 overall) and U-Hi (9-2) are both 6-0 in the Greater Spokane League with three matches left. They’ll break the tie at 7 p.m. Friday at U-Hi. Mead holds an 18-17 edge in league points because one of U-Hi’s wins came in overtime.

At G-Prep, Leah Brereton scored on Casey Lektorich’s throw-in with 2 minutes left to lift the Titans over the Bullpups (8-5, 2-4).

U-Hi received a gift at 7 minutes. G-Prep goalkeeper Shaynie Leonard tried to clear the ball from the line, but the ball hit a Bullpups defender and went in the goal. The Bullpups tied the match midway through the second half when Tara Hertel slotted in a crossing pass from Bridget Herrell.

At Mead Jr. High, Natalie Kehl’s 12th goal of the season and Jaci Pelton’s fifth guided the Panthers over LC and dropped the Tigers (6-5, 4-2) into a tie for fourth place.

Ferris (8-5, 4-2) joined LC in fourth after a 6-0 win at North Central (1-10, 0-6). Six different Saxons scored, two off Megan Cummings’ assists.

Central Valley (7-4, 4-2) jumped into third place following a 7-2 night win over visiting Mt. Spokane (2-9, 2-4). The Bears have the same record as Ferris and LC, but lead the points standings 13-12 because of an overtime loss.

Corinne Gannon, who had been coming off the bench, totaled three goals and two assists for CV.

At the Complex, Kristen Hawley scored twice, giving her 10 goals for the season, as Shadle Park (5-8, 2-4) notched a 6-0 win over visiting Rogers (2-11, 0-6).

Shadle is tied for sixth place with G-Prep and Mt. Spokane, six points out of fifth. The top five advance to district play, which begins Oct. 30.

Shadle and Prep meet Friday at Shadle, meaning one team will be eliminated from district contention.

LC and CV have tough schedules remaining, which gives sixth-place teams hopes of moving up. LC travels to CV on Friday and still has U-Hi left on its schedule. CV must still play Mead.

The league season ends Oct. 24. A tiebreaker, if needed, will be Oct. 28 at a neutral site.

The league champ receives an automatic berth to the state playoffs.
