Johns Hopkins’ Talent Search Honors Area 5th-7th Graders

Several Inland Northwest students in the fifth through seventh grades were honored last spring for outstanding verbal and/or mathematical abilities.

They were among more than 1,000 students nationwide to participate in a talent search conducted by the Institute for the Academic Advancement of Youth at Johns Hopkins University, co-sponsored by the University of Washington’s Halbert Robinson Center for the Study of Capable Youth.

To qualify, fifth- and sixth-grade students had to score at the eighth- and ninth-grade levels; and seventh-grade students had to score at the 12th-grade level.

The students are listed alphabetically by their hometown, school and the grades they were in when they were tested:

Chattaroy: Tyler Gray, Riverside Middle School, seventh grade.

Cheney: Joseph Gosse and Billy Weisgerber, seventh; and Maria Jabon and Julie Teuton, sixth, all Cheney Middle School.

Colbert: Patrick Bradley, St. Thomas More, seventh.

Elk: Alexander Hallenius, Debra Lynch and Virginia Seganos, seventh, all Riverside Middle School.

Liberty Lake: Meghan McGarry, Central Valley School District, seventh.

Mead: Jack McKinnon, Trinity Elementary, fifth; and Brian Reyes, seventh; Northwood Jr. High.

Spokane fifth graders: Christine Beamer, Kelly Boubel, Ariel Grubb, Eric Haskins, and Michael McKay, all of Hutton; Katherine Ditton, Christina Higgins and Keaton Stagman, all of Cataldo; Matthew Kries, St. Patrick; Brian Birgenheier, Colin Sowder, Riley Steiner and Avi Zellman, all of Jefferson; Austen Zajonc, Freeman; and Jamie Zink, Seth Woodard.
