Blackhawks Match Bears With 0-7 Start

Associated Press

Grant Fuhr made 28 saves for his 21st career shutout as the fast-starting St. Louis Blues continued host Chicago’s frustrating season with a 2-0 victory over the Blackhawks on Friday night.

Geoff Courtnall and Harry York each scored for the Blues, who at 6-1 are off to their best start since joining the NHL in 1967-68. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks dropped to 0-7-0 (dismally similar to Chicago’s NFL Bears) and equaled their worst start ever, set in 1947-48.

The Blackhawks, shut out for the second straight game at home, have not scored in 179 minutes and 32 seconds of play. Chicago, which has recorded a league-low six goals so far, also has been blanked in three of its last four outings.

Michael Nylander scored with 20 seconds left in overtime to cap a Calgary comeback from a 4-0 deficit as the host Flames won their first of the season and handed the Colorado Avalanche their first loss, 6-5.

Boston’s Jim Carey stopped 32 Vancouver shots to extend his shutout streak to 128 minutes and 31 seconds in the Bruins’ 2-0 win.

Bellows to Germany

Former NHL left wing Brian Bellows signed a one-year contract with the Berlin Capitals of the German Elite League.

Bellows, 33, played last season with Anaheim. He had 462 career goals and 515 assists in 1,101 NHL games. He added 45 goals and 64 assists in 122 playoff contests and won the Stanley Cup with Montreal in 1993.
