Cone Has Shoulder Surgery

Yankees right-hander David Cone underwent arthroscopic surgery on his ailing right shoulder, and the team said he’ll be ready to pitch during spring training. Cone, 34, will begin rehabilitation immediately and could resume throwing in six weeks.

The Oakland Athletics replaced Sandy Alderson, the longest-serving general manager in the majors, with assistant Billy Beane, 35. Alderson remains as president and continues to oversee day-to-day operations.

Television ratings for baseball’s recent league championships dropped 1 percent, making the 1997 series the lowest-rated in history.
