The Ferris homecoming fireworks show started with 9 seconds left on the clock, then the buses that were supposed to pick up the Saxons were nowhere to be found.
That perfectly describes the way the football season has gone for the Saxons.
Ferris dropped another heart-breaking Greater Spokane League game Friday night at Albi Stadium when Lewis and Clark’s Pete Flatt boomed a 42-yard field goal with 20 seconds left to lift the Tigers to a 16-15 win.
The play was perfect for Flatt, who practices at that distance, but he had a 36-yarder blocked on the last play of the third quarter.
“If I don’t think about the distance it’s easier for me,” Flatt said. “I feel good now. I felt a little shakey after that first one was blocked.”
Flatt, who rushed for 63 yards and caught a 21-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, tried to win the game a play earlier with a halfback pass into the end zone.
“It’s good when you’re concentrating on running,” he said, “then you just have to step up and kick.”
In the second half of the doubleheader, which drew 4,768 fans, Kevin O’Connell ran for four touchdowns and threw for another as Gonzaga Prep pounded out a 33-6 win over North Central.
Shadle Park played a non-league game at Kennewick and lost 42-0. Mt. Spokane fell 55-21 to Sandpoint.

The teams have opposite records, which means nothing when the South Hill rivals meet. And that was true again as the Saxons (1-5 overall, 1-5 GSL) led the Tigers (5-1, 5-1) 12-0 at halftime. However, LC held Ferris without a first down in the second half, turned a pair of fumble recoveries into touchdowns and rallied to clinch a playoff berth.
“When we went in at halftime, no one hung their head, everybody was positive,” Flatt said. “Our defense shut them down.”
Miguel Romero, a 250-pound defensive lineman who helped dominate the Saxons, said, “We upped the intensity, we started playing with our hearts. We were down 12-0 but we came out thinking it was 0-0. It was a real emotional game.”
The Saxons scored on 44- and 43-yard John Slack field goals. He also pulled 45- and 47-yarders wide left. They also had a 5-yard touchdown run by Nick Bozo.
LC had 46 yards rushing in the first half, 40 passing and three turnovers.
“Our mistakes certainly contributed (to the deficit) but they’re good enough to take advantage and make plays,” Tiger coach John Hook said. “We eliminated mistakes and started playing with more heart and intensity.”
LC finished with 93 yards rushing and 164 passing.
“We didn’t deserve to lose that one,” Ferris coach Clarence Hough said.

Any hope the Indians (0-6, 0-5) had for an upset ended in the final minute of the first half.
The Bullpups (5-1, 4-1) had the ball on their 30 after NC kicked off following a touchdown that made the score 14-6 with 58 seconds left in the half. After a pair of runs, O’Connell hit Chris Shogun for 31 yards down the right sideline, O’Connell ran for 10 yards and then lofted a 16-yard pass to Shane Hartnett in the end zone as time expired. The kick made it 21-6.
O’Connell, who finished with 123 yards on 18 carries, scored on Prep’s first possession, a 24-yard run where he ran over a tackler on the 10 and dragged another the final 5 yards. He added another 1-yard scoring run in the second quarter but the Indians responded with a solid 15-play, 55-yard drive capped by Nick Froscheiser’s 4-yard run.
O’Connell added scoring runs of 14 and 23 yards in the fourth quarter.

Willie Kahn passed for 138 yards and rushed for 88 to lift the Lions (3-3) over the visiting Highlanders (1-5).
Kennewick’s Tony Pratt rushed for 112 yards on five carries. The Lions picked off Shadle QB Chris Ryan twice. For Shadle, Tim Snell rushed for 83 yards on 16 carries and Jeff Livingston added 65 yards on 13 carries.

Caleb Bowman set a school record with four TD receptions as the Bulldogs (5-2) toppled the visiting Wildcats (0-6).
Bowman finished with 11 receptions for 119 yards. Paul Nieman completed 12 of 20 for 178 yards and sat out the second half. Kurt Berkley added 189 yards on 20 carries.
Mt. Spokane finished with 258 yards and four turnovers.
