Nina Culver Correspondent

Opportunity Christian Church is beginning a new parenting class titled “Growing up Together.”

The six-week video series will be offered at the church, 708 N. Pines, each Sunday beginning Oct. 26 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. A discussion will follow each film.

Topics to be covered include parents’ expectations of their children, family feelings, family communication, exploring problems as opportunities for growth, resolving problems, and encouraging independence.

No advance registration is necessary. For more information on the free class, call the church office at 926-3691.

Opportunity Christian is also holding a special collection for the next two Sundays for Church World Service. Each $5 collected will purchase a wool blanket to be given to those in need around the country and around the world. Those interested in making a donation can call the church office.

‘Spud the Light’ fund-raiser

Valley Assembly of God Church, 15618 E. Broadway, will host a “Spud the Light” fund-raiser Sunday after the 6 p.m. worship service. Church youth will be serving hot baked potatoes complete with a variety of toppings, including cheese, butter, sour cream, broccoli, mushrooms and chives.

Donations will be accepted. All proceeds will benefit the Speed the Light Foundation, which purchases vehicles for missionaries stationed around the world.

Valley Assembly will also host a chili feed and talent night at 6:30 p.m. Friday. There is no set price for the evening, so donations will be accepted. All proceeds will help fund the annual ladies retreat in the Spring.

For more information, call the church office at 924-0466.

Teen suicide prevention workshop

Three Valley churches and the Spokane Regional Health District are teaming up to offer a teen suicide prevention workshop geared to help parents recognize suicidal warning signs and learn the steps to take to assist teens in getting the help they need.

The free workshop will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27 at North Pines Junior High, 701 N. Pines. The program will repeat at the same time on Oct. 29.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection are sponsoring the event. The three Veradale churches, located in close proximity to one other, occasionally host tri-parish events.
