Youth’s Death In Wreck Prompts School To Cancel Games

Associated Press

The teenage driver of a pickup died Friday afternoon in Challis shortly before a scheduled Challis High School football game, which was canceled.

The victim’s name was not released by the Custer County Sheriff’s Department. Four other teens were also riding in the pickup, two in the front and two in back, according to a report from the sheriff’s department. All involved were under the age of 18.

The varsity football game with Ririe was canceled, as was an earlier junior varsity game.

Football coach Robert Rogers said he heard about the accident only about an hour before the junior varsity game. One of the players involved in the accident was on the varsity squad and three were on the junior varsity.

“It was kind of chaos around here,” Rogers said.

After talking with students and others, Rogers said he and the school athletic director decided playing the games wouldn’t be appropriate.

None of the football players suffered serious injuries, Rogers said.
