Cindy Porter-Lonyo Graduates From Air Force Nco Academy

Air Force Tech. Sgt. Cindy L. Porter-Lonyo, a 1983 Coeur d’Alene High School graduate, recently graduated from the Air Force Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Kapaun Air Force Station, Kaiserslautern, Germany.

Porter-Lonyo, daughter of Donna and John Orr of Coeur d’Alene, received training in advanced military leadership and management techniques, behavioral science studies and communication skills.

She is an aircraft mechanic crew chief and assigned to the 100th Aircraft Generation Squadron, RAF Mildenhall, England.

Army Spec. Darrell Kempton, a 1993 Coeur d’Alene High School graduate and son of Dave and Donna Kempton of Coeur d’Alene, has graduated from One Station Unit Training at Fort McClellan, Ala., which included basic military training and advanced individual training.

Army Pvt. Rusty N. Bergerson, a 1997 Post Falls High School graduate, has graduated from the M1 Abrams tank system mechanic course at Fort Knox, Ky.

Bergerson, son of Loran and Theresa Bergerson of Post Falls, received training in combat, maintaining tank systems, fundamentals of components and assemblies of engines, powertrains, suspensions and steering controls.

Eastern Washington University has announced the Dean’s List for spring quarter. Local students and their hometowns are listed.

Caroline James, a Lenore, Idaho resident who is originally from India, recently won the 1997 Idaho Book Award as the author of “Nez Perce Women in Transition.”

James, who received a Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Idaho and is currently working on a new book manuscript, received the award from the Idaho Library Association for her depictions of the domestic role and status of Nez Perce Indian women.

The book explores, through individual accounts, personal interviews and more than 160 photographs, the Nez Perce women’s challenges of adapting to the realities of acculturation into a non-native society in Idaho and the historical, political and cultural changes that have occurred since 1877 and the active role these women continue to play in the Nez Perce culture.
