Cordero Opts For Abuse Trial

Compiled From Wire Services

Wilfredo Cordero turned down a plea bargain that would have kept him out of jail. Now the former Red Sox outfielder will have to confront spousal abuse charges in court in Cambridge, Mass. If convicted, he faces a maximum of eight years in prison.

Jury selection was expected to begin today.

Former pitcher John Montefusco, 47, the N.L. Rookie of the Year in 1975, is in jail in Freehold, N.J., accused of sexually assaulting and threatening his exwife in two separate incidents. Bail was set at $60,000 pending a court appearance set for today. If convicted, Montefusco could face 20 years in prison.
