Davenport Wins Fifth 1997 Title

Fourth-seed Lindsay Davenport defeated France’s Nathalie Tauziat 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 to win the $926,000 European Indoor Tennis Championships in Zurich, Switzerland, her fifth title this season. She jumps to a career-high ranking of No. 4 in the world.

Zimbabwe’s Byron Black upset French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) to win the $725,000 Marlboro Tennis Championships in Hong Kong.

Karol Kucera of Slovakia, after winning the first set 6-2, beat Magnus Norman in the final of the $975,000 ATP Czech Indoor in Ostrava when the Swede retired because of a leg injury.

Fabrice Santoro, 24, of France, captured the first ATP Tour tournament of his career, the $750,000 Lyon Grand Prix in France, by beating Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-4.
