Football Hall Taps Robinson

From Wire Reports

The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame will honor Jackie Robinson by awarding its highest honor to his widow at a Dec. 9 dinner in New York.

Rachel Robinson will receive the foundation’s gold medal to commemorate the 50th anniversary of her husband breaking baseball’s color barrier.

Jackie Robinson, who died in 1972, played two years of football at UCLA and is the only four-sport letter-winner in the school’s history. He also lettered in track, baseball and basketball.

Robinson was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.

Injured player loses suit

A jury in Austin, Texas, ruled Monday against a paralyzed former college football player who had hoped to prove he was an employee of Texas Christian University and eligible for workers compensation coverage.

After deliberating an hour, 10 of the 12 jurors concluded that Alvis Waldrep Jr. was not a TCU employee when he was hurt in the Alabama game Oct. 26, 1974.

On that day, he sustained a spinal cord injury that has left him paralyzed from the waist down.

Waldrep, 43, had hoped his suit would lead to worker’s compensation coverage for college athletes.

Davie sticks with Powlus

Ron Powlus is still the starter, but his days of being Notre Dame’s only quarterback are over.

A day after saying he needed to re-evaluate the quarterback job, coach Bob Davie said junior backup Jarious Jackson will get more playing time, starting with Saturday’s game with Boston College.

“Ron still gives us the best chance to win, but if our offense bogs down, we’ve got to find a solution for that,” Davie said. “We need to find out if Jarious Jackson is an option for us. So we need to play him… .

“We’re not going to wait and see how it’s going,” he said. “Our intention is to get Jarious Jackson in the game early.”
