Milestones

Ten years ago: Sometimes acrimonious debate began in the Senate on the nomination of Judge Robert H. Bork to the U.S. Supreme Court. (Two days later, the Senate voted 58-42 to reject the nomination.)

Five years ago: A report prepared for the Los Angeles police commission found that the city was unprepared to handle the rioting that broke out the previous spring, and had responded inadequately.

One year ago: President Clinton’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gays in the military survived its first Supreme Court test.
