Ferris Ensures Self Of Volleyball Title

The Greater Spokane League’s Fab Five marked up volleyball wins Tuesday as the regular season dwindled down to one last match.

Reserve Shayla Bush had 10 digs to help Ferris (16-1) defeat visiting University 15-10, 15-8, 15-3 and clinch at least a tie for its second straight title and seventh overall.

Ferris all-leaguer Missy Blackshire nursed a sore shoulder. The Titans (4-13) led the opener 10-4 before the Saxons rallied.

Janelle Edington served six consecutive first-game points and Abby Hornstein added four straight as Mead (15-2) needed 45 minutes for a 15-1, 15-2, 15-0 win over visiting Mt. Spokane (0-17).

Mead and Ferris have earned first-round byes to the Cavanaugh’s Inns District 8-4A tourney, which begins Oct. 30 at Mt. Spokane.

Shadle Park (12-5), Lewis and Clark (12-5) and Rogers (11-6) are also district-bound. Shadle and LC will determine third place Thursday during a season-ender at LC, with the winner opening district against No. 6. Rogers will open district against the Shadle-LC loser.

Michelle Etter’s 15 kills helped host Shadle turn back Gonzaga Prep 6-15, 15-12, 15-7, 15-7.

G-Prep (7-10) holds a one-match lead over Central Valley (6-11) for the sixth district spot. Prep ends the season against Rogers, CV against U-Hi. A GSL sixth-place tiebreaker would be played Tuesday.

LC held tough in the opener and jumped to a 10-0 second-game lead to turn back visiting North Central 16-14, 15-4, 6-15, 15-5. Nicole Bostic’s three kills guided the Indians (2-15) in the third game, but LC steamed ahead 7-2 in the fourth.

Monica Abrahamson served eight consecutive points in the second and third games to guide Rogers to a 15-9, 15-4, 15-6 home win over CV.

Nikki Petticrew totaled 19 kills, 25 digs and 10 blocks as visiting Lakeside (6-6) defeated Deer Park 15-9, 15-12, 14-16, 15-13 to break a fourth-place tie in the Great Northern League.

The Stags (5-7), who defeated Lakeside in five game earlier this year, led the second game 7-1 and the fourth 10-5.

Elsewhere, first-place Colville (11-0) had 13 aces and hit on all but four serves to forge a 15-6, 15-11, 9-15, 15-4 win over visiting Chewelah (5-7).

An injury hurt Colville’s serve receive in the third game, but the Indians broke from a 3-all tie in the fourth, thanks to three Nicole Welfel kills.

Pullman (7-4) maintained third place with a 16-14, 15-1, 16-14 win over host Riverside (0-12) at Chattaroy. The Rams’ serving failed after leading the third game 14-11.

Girls soccer

Malea Schumacher scored three times from 20 yards or more as East Valley (8-2-1, 3-0-1) maintained its share of first place with a 3-0 win at West Valley (6-6-0, 1-3-0).

Schumacher, who has eight league goals, hit the upper corner on all three shots. EV defeated WV 6-0 in their first league match.

KDee Anderson and Jesse Fockler scored 1 minute apart to guide Cheney (6-2-2, 3-0-1) to a 5-0 win at Clarkston (2-6, 0-4).

Anderson broke through the defense and beat the goalkeeper. Fockler controlled a bouncing ball in front of the goal and shot it in.

Larissa Mueller, Brooke Dornquast and Tracy Koesel scored twice as Riverside (10-0-0) moved within one step of the GNL title with a 6-0 win that eliminated visiting Lakeside (2-7-2) from playoff contention.

Bernice Stime added three assists, giving her 18 for the year. The Rams have outscored league rivals 90-0.

Javanna Howard’s 10th league goal and Allison Biggs’ seventh led third-place Medical Lake (5-2-3) to a 2-0 win at Deer Park (2-6-3) that damaged the Stags’ flickering playoff hopes. ML and DP tied at 1 the first time they met.

DP is three points behind fourth-place Colville for the final playoff spot. Both have winless Chewelah left on their schedule. Colville also has a match left with Riverside.

Jamie McEldowney’s goal on a penalty kick, her fourth in four attempts this year, sent second-place Pullman (8-1-1) to a 4-2 win over visiting Colville (3-4-3).

Mindy Crumb’s goal gave the Greyhounds a 3-1 lead, then she fed Gazelle Samizay for her second goal of the night. Colville’s Stacey McConnell secured a loose goal in the box for a 1-all match at 51 minutes.

Cross country

Lakeside’s boys wrapped up a perfect season, and Pullman’s girls upset Colville to allow Riverside to tie for the title as the GNL regular season ended.

Mike Witt set his second consecutive course record to lead top-ranked Lakeside (7-0) to a three-way win over Newport (2-5) and Deer Park (0-7) at DP. Lakeside grabbed the top eight spots. Witt finished the 3.1 miles in 16 minutes, 49 seconds, 2 seconds up on teammate Trevor Smith.

Sarah Bell, in a course-record 20:48, guided second-ranked Newport (5-2) over Lakeside (3-4) and DP (0-7).

At Medical Lake, Crystal Evans of third-ranked Colville (6-1) was the girls winner in 20:20, but second-place Carrie Huffaker (20:31) guided Pullman (4-3) to a 27-28 upset. ML finished 1-6.

The seventh-ranked Colville boys (6-1) took four of the top five spots, topped by champion Skyler Johnson’s 17:04. Runner-up Jeff Wendt (17:22) led ML (3-4) over Pullman (1-6).

On Chewelah’s 3-mile course, Makalya Gabel’s 21:11 winning time allowed Riverside (6-1) to defeat the host Cougars (3-4) and tie for the league crown. Chewelah’s Michelle Kinney was 10 seconds back; three of the next four runners were from Riverside.

Bill Warner of the ninth-ranked Riverside boys (5-2) passed Neil Small of Chewelah (4-3) in the last half-mile to guide the Rams’ 26-30 win. Both runners were timed in 16:47.
