Five years ago: The space shuttle Columbia was launched on a 10-day mission that included deployment of an Italian satellite. The Atlanta Braves beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2 in Game 5 of the World Series.

One year ago: Thirty-four people were killed when a flaming Boeing 707 jet sliced through dozens of homes minutes after takeoff from Ecuador’s Manta airport. The New York Yankees won Game 3 of the World Series, defeating the Atlanta Braves 5-2.
