Becker Bows Out Early

Compiled From Wire Services

Boris Becker, playing perhaps his final major tournament at home, was knocked out of the Eurocard Open in Stuttgart, Germany, along with second-ranked Michael Chang and four other seeded players.

Becker, the defending champion, lost 7-6 (12-10), 6-4 to Richard Krajicek, the 1996 Wimbledon champion.

The WTA Tour Player Review Committee has approved the tour’s recommendation of a $5,000 fine against Romania’s Irina Spirlea for an obscene remark she made after losing to Venus Williams at the U.S. Open.
