U-Hi Cross Country Girls Running For Title

A year ago, University High’s girls cross country team won the battle but lost the war.

The Titans defeated Lewis and Clark 27-34 during league competition, then lost to the eventual state runnerup Tigers during regionals.

Next Wednesday they’ll hope for a turnabout.

U-Hi had to settle for a share of the Greater Spokane League championship after losing to the Tigers in their season finale, 24-32.

It was, however, the first Titan girls cross country title of any stripe. And during the year, Jaime Miller lost only to Ferris’s Emily Hawkins.

U-Hi’s unbeaten boys swept to their first undisputed title in the 22-year GSL history. They had shared a title in 1984. Seth Mott lost only to Mt. Spokane-Mead’s Tommy Becker by a scant six seconds.

East Valley’s boys and girls finished undefeated in the Frontier League to complete a second-year sweep of their titles.

Next Wednesday’s state-qualifying regional meets at Hangman Valley, beginning at noon, feature Big Nine schools against those from the GSL in the 4A race and eight Mid-Valley League teams against Frontier League schools in the 3A race.

At stake are four team and 20 individual state berths each for 4A boys and two team and 10 individual boys and girls 3A state berths.

While first-place league finishes for the Titan boys and EV teams may mean state team berths, nothing’s for sure in the 4A girls race.

Eisenhower of Yakima, U-Hi, Mead, LC and Shadle Park, Kennewick and perhaps Ferris are within breathing distance of each other for the team spots.

Runners win Valley Christian’s first ever Bi-County team championship

Valley Christian’s girls won their first-ever cross country trophies over a two week period.

The Panthers on Thursday won the school’s first Bi-County League championship of any kind after finishing second in the Reardan Invitational a week ago.

“The kids did a great job at Reardan and had a great chance (as such) to win the Bi-County,” said coach Linda Lanker.

Krisi Wright was second at Reardan and third in the Bi County meet.

Fellow freshmen Kristen Lanker, Nicole Peterson and Allison West finished fifth, seventh and 10th respectively.

Freshman Steve Goering was Valley Christian’s top finisher in the boys race, placing seventh.

State qualifying for A/B runners is Thursday at Hangman Valley. Only one girls team and five individuals, but three boys teams and 12 individuals qualify for state.

Home field advantage

When East Valley and Cheney battle for the Frontier League soccer championship Tuesday, home field is the plum.

The league runnerup will play third-place West Valley 3 p.m. Thursday at the home of the champion.

Saturday at 1 p.m. the survivor will play the champ, needing two wins to advance to state.

EV took the season to its title showdown with a 3-0 victory at WV last Tuesday and beat Clarkston on Thursday. Malea Schumacher had a three-goal hat trick against WV and five scores for the week.

When the Knights played the Blackhawks earlier this year, the two finished in a 2-2 tie.

Knights secure title tie

With Thursday’s victory in Clarkston and Cheney’s win over West Valley, East Valley has earned at least a tie for its second straight Frontier League volleyball championship.

The Knights will be outright champs and host the playoffs if they win at WV on Tuesday.
